Thomas Paine, an international revolutionary, played a vital role in persuading the Americans to break their ties with Great Britain. In 1776, Paine wrote "Common Sense,' a 47-page pamphlet, to support the call for American independence from Britain. Thousands of colonists read Common Sense; it soon came under the "best-seller" category. Similarly, in 1791, Paine came with another pamphlet, "The Rights of Man." It, too, became popular and was the most widely-read pamphlet in the 18th and 19th centuries. Paine's bold ideas and statements were considered outrageous and were often dismissed. However, Paine's ideas generated interest and enthusiasm across different regions.
