After the culmination of the second world war, the world was divided into two blocs. The US  and its allies led the western bloc, and USSR and its communist allies led the Eastern bloc. The cold war began in 1947 as the Soviet Union and the US started an ideological proxy war. During this period, the two superpowers tried to stop each other's ideology from spreading to newly developed countries.
