Introduction

Lectin is the collective name for all sugar-binding proteins. Lectins have one or more than one binding site for glycans. 

Sialic acid is a 9-carbon alpha-keto acid often found in the terminal position in the glycan moiety of glycoproteins. Sialic acid is linked to the hydroxyl group on carbon 3 or carbon 6 of galactose or to the carbon 6 hydroxyl group of N-acetylglucosamine or N-acetylgalactosamine residues. These residues are found on cell surfaces as either glycoproteins or glycolipids where they play an important role in cell recognition.
