Step 1

The multiprotein ATP synthase catalyses ATP synthesis as protons flow back through the inner membrane down the electrochemical proton gradient. It consist of two components - F0 and F1.  The Fcomponent is embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane and contain one ‘a’ subunit, two ‘b’ subunit and 9-12 ‘c’ subunit. The alpha subunit includes two half channels. Protons can pass into either of these channels. Each proton enters the cytoplasmic half channel , follows a complete 3600 rotation of the c ring.
