The tribal communities in Arab were united by Muhammad, who had undertaken the role of the Prophet after his religious epiphany. He preached the religion of Islam in the Arabic region, which during that period was polytheistic in nature. As a result of this, many Muslims during Muhammad's time faced persecution. Due to this, Muhammad and his followers had to escape Mecca to Medina. The time period that followed this saw many battles being fought to see who would control Mecca. Finally, Prophet Muhammad persevered and Mecca was conquered. This ushered in Islam in the Arabian Peninsula, with the old Gods being purged by Muhammad and his followers. After his death, many rulers succeeded him, who further spread Islam to various regions of the world.
