Who was Henry the Navigator?

1. the first european to sale around the south of Africa

2, the first explorer to discover the americas

3 the first explorer to circumnavigate the world

4. the funder of explorations to map the west coast of africa

Expert Solution
Step 1 Introduction

Henry the Navigator was a Portuguese sailor who lived from 1394 - 1460 . He is said to be the initiator of the 'age of discovery'  in his country.  He planned and executed many such expeditions to many countries outside Europe. That opened up a new naval route to Asia , from Europe.

The second option is incorrect , as Henry was not the first explorer to discover America. The land today known as America was known to the Vikings and other ancient people since ages before Henry existed. Columbus is usually credited with the discovery of America , but that is also discredited by other historians , but certainly , Henry was not the first one.

The first person to circumnavigate the whole world , was another Portuguese , named Ferdinand Magellan. He did this act starting in 1599. Henry did not live by this time and therefore the third option is also incorrect.

The fourth option is correct , as Henry was the main person interested in Africa and its exploration. He not only planned and funded missions but also carried out most of them himself and led others indirectly.  He opened up Africa for the Portuguese .
