Journal: Careers and Roles in Corrections xxxxx The University of Arizona Global Campus CRJ 303: Corrections Professor Abood December
For this journal, I will be discussing a job position within a correctional system and how it associates to the correctional goals. I will also discuss how the position contributes to both social justice and criminal justice. I went to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website and looked under the careers section and looked at many job opportunities. I chose the supervisory correctional officer position because it stood out to me as a position that has more responsibility than a correctional officer. The duties for a supervisory correctional officer include maintaining security of the correctional facility, investigate reported violations such as contraband getting into the facility, inmates escapes, assaults and then taking appropriate actions to resolve the issues. This position also requires supervising other correctional staff, handling problems with inmates, and in emergencies take proper action to determine the causes of the emergency (“Federal Bureau of Prisons” n.d). These duties relate to correctional goals, mainly with rehabilitation. A supervisory correctional officer can work with other staff to assist inmates navigate through the rehabilitation and reentry process by guiding them and giving them tasks to do which can better their behavior. There are programs that correctional officers can encourage inmates to participate in such as drug and alcohol treatment programs, enrolling into workforce or community services programs and by going back to school and finishing a degree. Correctional officers can also help with incapacitation because once someone is placed in prison, they can guide them in a positive way to help them change their behavior and upon release they can have a different perspective of life and not commit further crimes. This position also contributes to both social justice and criminal justice objectives because this position’s main objective is to maintain order in a correctional facility by holding inmates accountable for their actions and reinforce positive social behaviors to the inmates so when they go back into society, they can be
better people, and which can help deter crime if they are guided by people who want to help them change their life. This not only helps the offender, but it contributes to society because it builds a safer community for everyone. This position carries a lot of responsibility, but the main objective is to make a positive change for individuals and help them strive for a better life.
