Week 3, Assignment 2 Overview - For this Assignment-Worksheet, you will choose ONE social problem and start to explore research from sociology journals that have been conducted on that topic. For example, you might select unemployment among minority populations or even poverty among veterans. You will search the APUS library and other reputable scholarly websites such as Google Scholar (more than the abstract; you must read the article) and find three current sociology journal articles from sociology journals that are focused on the social problem you selected. The journal articles should be no more than five years old. Instructions: 1. Choose “One” social problem. 2. Search the APUS library, Google Scholar, and other reputable scholarly sites to find three research studies on your ONE topic (sociology journal articles no more than five years old). Do not use unverifiable, secondary sites such as Wikipedia, ask.com, about.com, and similar. 3. Complete ( in your own words ) and submit the following worksheet for the three sociology journal articles. (2023). Loneliness and firearm acquisition among low-income U.S. veterans: Findings from the National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences (NV-HOPE) study. Social Science & Medicine (1982) , 338 , 116356– 116356. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.socscimed.2023.116356 Summary (at least 4 sentences) Once out of the military veterans don’t always receive the care that they need. Veterans tend to feel lonely which leads to them wanting to purchase firearms. The feeling of being lonely leads to mental health problems. Veterans and mental health issues are one of the leading causes of suicide.

Key Study Results (at least 5 sentences) Veterans purchase firearms so they can self- protection and being in control. With purchasing a firearm, they don’t feel lonely, they feel like they have something there to comfort them. 71% of veteran suicides are from firearm usage. There needs to be centers around for veterans to be able to use when they feel lonely and there needs to be a better reason for veterans to purchase firearms rather than loneliness. If you met with the authors think of a question you would ask them related to the stu dy (2 sentences). What can help veterans feel the void of loneliness? Why do you think they resort to purchasing a firearm for comfort? Poverty for Veterans comes in many different forms such as where they live, their cost of living, and how much they are making annually if they are employed or receiving disability checks. Key Study Results (at least 5 sentences) The study shows that in 2022 approximately 250,000 veterans were unemployed, and more than 4.8 billion veterans were disabled. It is more likely that the disabled veterans are homeless. About 1.2 million veterans reported income below the poverty average. Poverty and homelessness in veterans are connected and is only getting worse. Veterans are more likely to be in poverty than those over 18 that are non-veterans.

While in service members receive the care that they need to live and have the essential items. Resources are not the same for veterans as they are for active-duty members. Problems with transitioning to civilian life led to more mental health issues as well as homelessness and poverty. Key Study Results (at least 5 sentences) Nearly 7% of veterans experience income deprivation, unemployment, and disability. Veterans lack the real help of transitioning to civilian life which creates more of them to be homeless. Although there is a high rate of veterans that receive disability the lack of guidance causes deprivation in many areas. Income deprivation rates between combat veterans and non-veterans are much different.
