Sofia Marquez ETHNS 300 LEC 18237 Critical Reflection #2 What do you think is the most impactful and longest lasting form of oppression in our society? Explain. After reading these two documents I found that the most impactful and longest lasting form of oppression in our society is most likely institutional oppression. I believe that this is the most impactful today because even in the article many of the examples of this type of oppression can be found all over the U.S. Although we have laws that are in place to prevent this type of oppression, many times it still occurs. For example, if we look into our justice system we will see that black and brown men are disproportionately prosecuted, and given harsher punishments than white men for the same crime. This form of oppression has lasted for many years even with policies that are in place to prevent it from happening. These policies in place very rarely prevent oppression from happening, and because of this I find it to be so impactful on the people of our society. It tells the oppressed that they are inferior no matter what, whether that be minorities, women, or people apart of the LGBTQ. What are the different forms of power, who can exercise them, and how is that power exerted in/on society? The different forms of power are physical force, wealth, state action or government, social norms, ideas, and numbers. Anyone can exercise power and depending on the type of power you are trying to exercise you may have more power than others. Power is exerted in society in different ways, through government is one clear example. We can exert power by
voting for different policies and people to work in our government system. How does Crenshaw define intersectionality ; what is the importance and necessity of having an intersectional analysis when examining social issues? Crenshaw defines intersectionality as a metaphor for understanding the way that multiple forms of inequality or disadvantage overlap or work together and are not well understood from the different forms of self advocacy that we have. Intersectionality is important to understand because it helps us to realize that not only one disadvantage may be playing a part in that problem, there are multiple factors that play a part in the problem. We must understand intersectionality if we want to solve problems of inequality because we can’t just examine one factor when fighting against discrimination of all kinds. We must take into account all overlapping factors if we want to achieve true equality. What specific components make up your intersectional identity (ie. race, gender, sexuality, religion, socio-economic status, occupation, political affiliation etc.) ? The specific components that make up my intersectional identity is that I am a white-hispanic, heterosexual woman. I am also a christian, currently a student and part-time retail key holder, and I identify as a liberal socialist politically. Examine your own life, and explain one form of community cultural wealth that you have from your own community. One form of community cultural wealth that I have from my community is aspirational capital. Growing up my family has never had money, and I grew up in poverty for almost my entire childhood. I have known this for a very long time, and I knew my parents would never be able to afford my higher education. I also would never be able to afford schooling on my own, rather than putting myself even farther into debt I chose to do community college to save some
money. Then eventually pull out a loan for Nursing school, and getting my bachelors degree. I have also faced many other obstacles that may have interfered with my education. But through all these hard times I am still able to push forward and work towards my educational goals. I have maintained these goals and now I am one step closer to achieving them.
