2 Four Theories Most Useful in Working with Undocumented Adolescents and Their Families Functionalist Theory There are four assumptions most experts agree surround Functionalist Theory. Firstly, a social structure or system exists within society, and second, we should study society “scientifically, and as a whole,” (Sociology, n.d.). Also, an assumption about Functionalist Theory is that we will achieve “greater levels of human happiness and progress if we cooperate and work together,” (Sociology, n.d.) and, finally, “institutions perform positive functions that benefit society as a whole,” (Sociology, n.d.). This theory helps us understand families because when there are dysfunctions within an undocumented family, knowing the family roles and societal expectations helps to better diagnose and treat family issues. Within the LatinX household are individuals who assume basic family roles, and how they perform those duties weighs heavily on the continuity of the family as a unit. According to the text, a family’s main function is to “procreate and socialize children,” (Allen et al., 2017, p.28). From this theory, I’ve learned that families operate as a unit, and each member of the unit has a role and is interdependent upon one another for a family unit to fully function. I learned about Manifest Functioning, intended purposes, and Latent Functions, unintended consequences, and how those functions develop and define family units.
3 Conflict Theory Basic Assumptions of Conflict Theory are that people, in general, are “rational beings” focused on self-interest, resources are “limited,” and acquiring resources will inevitably lead to “conflict.” (Drew, 2023) This Theory explores the conflict experienced between the haves and the have-nots. Conflict Theory applies well with the local undocumented population because many of them are impoverished and left their homelands with very little resources to start over with. Also, because of their inherent distrust for government agencies, their lack of understanding about the local services available, and their language acquisition and comprehension issues, this population absolutely suffers from inadequate ability to procure resources, and therefore this population would benefit greatly by Conflict Theory application. I’ve learned from Conflict Theory that members of society and families, alike, are in “competition over scarce resources,” (Allen et al., 2017, p.43). Also, I learned that workers become alienated from their labor. People are unable to pursue their dreams because they find themselves selling their time and labor, instead. Family Development Theory Family Development Theory assumes that families progress through typical roles after predetermined milestones have been reached. This theory assumes that most families follow a similar path, and that path is measured by members having successfully accomplished certain goals like marriage and child-birth, etc.

4 This theory helps with undocumented, non-English-speaking families because most of the local Hispanic, Asian, and Haitian immigrants assume SNAF roles, “reflecting the experiences of White, middle-class Americans with married, heterosexual parents,” (Allen et al., 2017, p.9). Of course, these are families of color, but they mostly assume the typical family structures we have coined as Standard North American Families: there is a head of the household, usually the man, and women take care of the household and the children. Understanding their cultures helps to understand the roles in their families. I learned that there is a universal framework surrounding family development that is correlates to human development, in general. “The family cycle concept has broad appeal…” (Allen et al., 2017, p.92) because it tells the story of typical human development: born, married, children, etc. Family Systems Theory A basic assumption of Family Systems Theory is that communication can contribute to relationship conflicts. Because “family members are interdependent,” (Allen et al., 2017, p.104) and do not act in isolation, communication is a crucial tool in the family dynamic. This theory would help with undocumented non-English speakers because communication is already an issue for them, and their families tend to be larger and more dynamic. Because of the large, overlapping, vague structures of modern immigrant households, this theory is especially applicable. “Human beings are unpredictable. We are motivated by different things, and our choices and preferences even change over time, as do the social forces surrounding us,” (Allen et al., 2017, p.105).
5 I learned about the importance communication plays within the family. It makes sense, of course: everyone always touts the importance of good communication, but I never realized how precarious families become because of poor communication or miscommunication.
