Sofia Marquez ETHNS 300 LEC 18237 Critical Reflection #1 1) Why do you think there was opposition to the SF State Student Strike and what impact and legacy did they leave behind? After examining these sources it appears that there was opposition to the SF State Student Strike because it threatened the power that white people held at this time. Many opposed to the strike because teaching ethnic studies would give power to minorities. They thought teaching this curriculum would give minorities more power, and disrupt the power imbalance of white supremacy that was happening at this time. The SF State Student Strike left a substancial mark in our education system. Without this strike many studies may not have been implemented into our education system. For many people we would not have nearly as much knowledge about other cultures as we do today. This strike even led to California requiring ethnic studies to get a college degree. Because of this we can better understand each other to harbor a more inclusive society. 2) What role did women play in the college student strike movements in the Bay Area, how were they treated, and what impact did they have? Provide examples from the video. The San Francisco State Student Strike in 1968 can be understood better by examining the roles of women who were active participants in the movement. Watching the interviews with women from the strike suggests that women played a crucial and strategic role. Their contributions often took on a nurturing and reasoning aspect within each group. In the interview, Estella Quintanilla expressed admiration for LaNada, highlighting her role within her group. Other members exhibited a strong loyalty to LaNada, pledging support and solidarity in case of any adversity. This dynamic suggests that women not only played integral roles in the practical aspects of the
strike but also provided essential emotional and supportive elements, contributing significantly to the strike's impact and legacy. 3) What are the 3 core actions necessary to turn awareness into action? The three core actions necessary to turn awareness into action are: expand the frame of the possible, choose a defining fight, and finally find an early win. 4) Which of Liu's three strategies is most difficult to attain by societal large groups? Explain. I found that the most difficult strategy to attain by societal large groups would be the second strategy, choose a defining fight. This seems the most difficult in comparison to the other strategies because this idea is something that you want to fight for before actually beginning to fight for change. If you pick something that is far out of reach it may be harder to find a large enough group of people to help you fight for change. 5) At this point in your life, what social issues do you feel passionate enough to advocate for? One social issue I feel very passionate about is a womans right to choose. Luckily, we live in California where this will most likely not be an issue that I will have to face myself, but not everyone is as fortunate as me. After the overturning of Roe V. Wade we have began to see the complications that arise from taking away this right from women. This topic is something that I have been very passionate about even before the overturning of this right. I believe that all women should have a choice to control their own bodies and should not be forced to have a child, or carry a child to term that may potentially harm them or the fetus. This topic is something I would advocate for anytime because I am so passsionate about it.
