Sofia Marquez ETHNS 300 LEC 18237 Critical Reflection #3 What is structural racism & what are some strategies/solutions that could be developed to address the gap between Black and White communities? Structural racism refers to the systems that we have in place that directly impact racial discrimination. These systems therefore reinforce discriminatory beliefs, values and the distribution of resources. Some examples of structural racism in our society are our housing, justice, education, health care, and employment systems. For most of these problems we need to raise awareness and fight for policies that will help to make a change in the gap between Black and White communities. Although we have some policies that are put into place to help we must work towards improving these to ensure equality. Of the strategies she provides to both White communities and communities of color, which of the strategies is the most difficult for you to commit to and why? Out of the six strategies that the article talked about I find that the most difficult strategy to commit to is taking risks to challenge racism. In some cases it is pretty easy to voice my opinions which people may find controversial, but sometimes it can be difficult to correct people on stereotypes or in other situations. Especially if I am not very close to the person, sometimes it is easier to let them say what they want to avoid an argument. In other situations I have no problem voicing my opinion and defending against racism. I try to stand up for what I believe even if I am somewhat uncomfortable confronting another person, and I understand how much of a difference it can make for our community.
Explain (5) main points about the history of race in U.S. that help you to better understand how race operates in the U.S. This video explains how race plays a part in our society, it begins by telling us about how we define race and how we used to define race. Around the 16th century we used race to show our kinship or group affiliation, rather than physical attributes as we do today. In the 17th and 18th century we began to see this shift of race being based upon physical appearance, and this was done for enslaving people. Some people found enslavement to be cruel, so to get people to justify slavery they changed race to be about physical attributes. Enlightenment is another concept that helps us to understand race in our society. Having a “natural” hierarchical systems emphasized similarities and differences between different groups of people and other creatures, they used this to prove that race was not a social construction but rather a “natural order system”. They also used a lack of recorded history to differentiate and justify their racism, since white people had documented history, while non-white didn’t and were inherently subordinate. Anti- miscegenation laws were also formed to sustain the idea of racial purity, keeping white people and non-white people from getting married. One final change we saw to the idea of race was how white used to be classified as just Anglo-Saxon people, while Celts, Slavs, Iberics, and Hebrews were classified as non-white until the early 20th century. They all became classified as white to maintain a majority against other races. What is the Racial Formation Theory and what are some components that create the theory in our social world? The Radical Formation Theory is “ the socio-historical process by which racial identities are created, lived out, and destroyed”. Some components that create the theory in our social world are of course the formation of “racial categories”. But to create these racial categories you must
have some form of power. The government can also enforce and alleviate inequalities depending on your racial category. According to the video Omi would argue that we are transitioning from a racial dictatorship to a racial democracy. Meaning that due to the force that came with the racial dictatorship, many people still chose to align with previous laws that cause segregation by choice, called racial democracy. Why do you think Critical Race Theory is such a contentious topic in the U.S. right now? Explain. I think that Critical Race Theory is such a contentious topic because it poses a threat to past racial power dynamics that the U.S was founded on. From my observation people tend to not like change, and changing the way we teach our history from seeming as the U.S is a great country and never did anything wrong to showing the dark truth of this country's upbringing, upsets many people. Teaching how white people colonized and mistreated people of color for their own benefit does not fit the oppressive narrative that some white people still uphold, and because they still hold the majority of the power in the U.S, Critical Race Theory is considered controversial.
