EDSP 622 Week 1 Discussion Thread: Assessment Through a Biblical Worldview After reading the article, The Teaching and Learning Cycle: Integrating Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment in the Learn section, write a thread that includes the following: 1. Find another scholarly journal article about education assessment today published within the past 5 years. 2. Compare/contrast the 2 journal articles. 3. Cite the articles in current APA format, including the URL if applicable. After reading the article, The Teaching and Learning Cycle: Integrating Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment by Donna L. Jones, I have a better understanding of what curriculum, instruction, and assessment look like in the classroom. She provided useful information that I can refer back to once I iding the students to a standard of truth, as well as the final standard that each student should reach. Every Christian educator should teach using different methods and strategies of instruction.” (Jones, 2008). These words she shares are so empowering to an aspiring Christian teacher, like myself. I know there are going to be very tough times in the field of education, where I might feel like giving up, however, if I stay grounded in faith I know that God will give me the guidance I need to get through it. To be an affective educator and work for a school district that strives to teach their students there must always be assessments put into place. When looking at different articles it is possible to see that there are different approaches that are similar but also have different philosophies. In The Teaching and Learning Cycle: Integrating Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, Jones describes assessment as "the student's skills acquisition, producing valid and reliable information about a student's academic standing and skills mastery at a specific time, providing a routine, quick assessment of learning" (p. 13-14). In addition to this, Cai and Hansen also agree that assessments should be done routinely to assess how students are doing academically. Both articles agree that through assessments educators are able to better decide what is best for students as well as what should be done to better educate future classrooms. The first thing I see clearly having read these journals or records, is educators must have the ability to understand what’s being taught; and how to make it reach the student body effectively. This shows the need to insert curriculum, instructions, and assessments in the instructor’s practices. Yes, it all starts with the teacher’s views on life or a particular subject in general. Believe it or not, if a teacher understands their subject, goes out their way to learn more about it, and is always open for someone to relay to them different ways to advance them or their classrooms; the subject becomes easier and relatable, while they are teaching students. Baron stated, “National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, is devoted to improving mathematics instruction and provides a forum for sharing activities and pedagogical strategies, deepening understanding of mathematical ideas, and linking mathematics education research to practice”. To practice pedagogical skills, schoolteachers must master the ability to correlate their teaching to groundwork in the subject of interest with relatedness. Any teacher’s goal should be
to correctly convey or help grow their student’s mind, behavior, and awareness of the subject being taught. A good way to maintain or achieve this goal is for teachers to make sure in the beginning of the subject they brief, make instructions incredibly clear, and establish a great foundation for learning. Imagine trying to lecture or correct a person in general, and you never can establish a time in Jones, Donna L. (2008) "The Teaching and Learning Cycle: Integrating Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment," Christian Perspectives in Education , 2(1). Jones, Donna L.
