Report
Bullying is anything that someone does, says, threatens to do, threatens to say, or even does with the intent to hurt someone emotionally or physically. Children who are being bullied within an academic environment can have their learning impeded. "Roughly 1 in 5 children ages 12 to 18 are bullied in U.S. schools, according to data released in 2019 by the National Center for Education Statistics. Bullying is more prevalent in middle school than in high school, with almost 1 in 3 students reporting incidents in sixth grade. Overall, girls are more likely to report bullying, with almost 24% doing so, compared with about 17% of boys" (Rosenkrantz, 2021). Bullying occurs more in middle school than in high school. Students who bully tend to have been bullied. School bullying is not often reported to the police. I would decide to use school records to see what data is available. Another way to get data is to go to the source which is the children. Surveys should be given to the students as well as their families. It can ask questions such as has the juvenile ever been bullied if so, how often were they bullied? In what form was the child bullied? Amongst other questions to help aid my research. The surveys would remain anonymous to help people feel more comfortable with the survey, but it should include risk demographics such as the respondent’s race, age, religion, and if they have disabilities. The survey results can depend on how many people complete the survey and how in-depth they fill out the survey. This would help to establish if there is a bullying problem. Younger children may not understand surveys. It can also be beneficial to get surveys from the staff at the school regarding bullying. To analyze the data, the person can collect the data from the surveys that are completed. The data should then be stored into bullying incidents and kids that have not been bullied. It should be organized into an age group format. It should then be organized into the type of bullying that occurred. Many factors lead to bullying. A response to the findings could provide a glimpse into what bullying is, how to determine what bullying is, and the effects of
bullying on the student. The police with the help of schools can host antibullying events to establish strategies to help prevent bullying. Law enforcement officials should also have officers show their presence in schools and have interactions with the students at the school. Law enforcement officers can help build relationships with the students, teachers, and parents to gain trust which can make them more likely to report cases of bullying. Police officers should also help enforce laws regarding bullying and should know the difference between bullying, harassment, and discrimination. Officers should also report to meetings between the staff, children, and parents when bullying is reported. Bullying is a form of youth violence and is an adverse childhood experience which is also known as an ACE. Resources Rosenkrantz, H. (2021, September 1).
