Empathy means to have the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. A person who has empathy is also a compassionate person with respect for someone else’s emotions. "At the time the term was coined, empathy was not primarily a means to feel another person's emotion, but the opposite: To have empathy, in the early 1900s, was to animate an object, or to project one's imagined feelings onto the world. Some of the earliest psychology experiments on empathy focused on … a bodily feeling or movement that produced a sense of merging with an object" (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). An example of an empathetic person is that of a person who has strong interactions and relationships with people in a family and work environment. The largest part of the criminal justice professionals that need to show strong emotions of empathy would be that of the court system. With a judge, they need to balance many things such as evidence and the people in front of them. The judge also may have a personal bias towards the type of crime that was committed in the case of a robbery victim; criminal justice professionals can show empathy in many ways. The court system should consider whether the robbery was violent or not. In cases like these, whether the person committed an armed robbery or shoplifted because they could not afford something that they needed. In these cases, the judge needs to show empathy and discretion. In these cases, police officers also need to show a great deal of empathy. "And individuals capable of empathy have higher self-esteem and enjoy life more fully. The other side is also true: people who have trouble empathizing with others tend to suffer from poorer mental health and have less fulfilling social relationships" (Posick, 2013). In these cases, the victim will be upset and might have suffered personal injury as well as personal loss. Some of the correct responses criminal justice professionals can have to that of a victim are to listen, understand, and even empathize with what has occurred to the victim of the robbery. This can mean explaining what could occur in the court process. This means the possibility of
being compensated for their losses and if a lawyer is needed this is in cases where the criminal is caught. Inappropriate responses from criminal justice professionals can make the situation worse. This can be in cases where they may blame the victim. If the police question the victim in the wrong manner the questioning can be very damaging to the victim and even show a lack of empathy on the officer’s part. Several people can show empathy in the case of a robbery such as that of a judge, lawyers, and even the jury. In this case, Officer Grumpy interacted with the victim. Empathy in this case affected the victim because it allowed the officer to find someone to help him. He missed so many days of work. the victim was scared to attend work due to the incident which involved him picking up people including young men and collecting fairs. He has also expressed that he has a bias towards the teenagers who participated in the robbery. The case eventually gained media attention and the offender was called a gang member due to the older gentleman’s fear. The response to the case was that if anyone catches the kid then the county attorney’s office should be notified. The response affected the victim because it left the victim feeling that the officer did not care about how the event affected the victim. I do not believe that this was an appropriate response as the victim needs to know that the officers care about their feelings regarding the situation. It is not fair to the victim that they feel that the criminal justice system does not care about their wellbeing. The victim should be shown the same respect as the offender because they are all dealing with the same situation. The officer who shows empathy for the offender is called Officer Friendly. He felt empathy for the offender as he has a teenage son around his age and was able to put himself in the position of the offender’s parents. Empathy affected the case because instead of the case going through the juvenile justice system, it went through diversion. since the case went through the diversion program the offender was able to go through a program called the restorative justice program for youth offenders. The role that the
media played in this case was by calling the offender a gang member. This made the offender look like a bad person rather than someone who made a poor choice. If the media had shown a different side of the case the offender would not have gotten off so easily. The offender should not have robbed the victim as the victim was just trying to make enough money to provide himself with the proper resources that he needed and now the victim cannot work due to fear.
