1 SWK 280A: FINAL TAKE HOME EXAM & PART 2 OF TAPING PROJECT DUE THURSDAY DECEMBER 16, 2021 ~ * Drop box open until 11:55 PM* 25 Points The purpose of this assignment is for you to: a. Recall your learning at the beginning of the course. If you have access to your recorded answers, you may use these but are not required to do so. If you do not use your recorded answers, please just recall your knowledge prior to class as best as you can. b. Reflect in writing on how learning in this class changed (or did not change) your ideas and attitudes about diversity and inequality; c. Integrate this learning with course readings; and d. Draft an initial plan to improve your cultural competence as a developing professional social worker (or for another profession, if you are not a social work major).    Below is a format for this take-home exam. Page length : No more than 5 pages (excluding title and reference pages).  I prefer that you think more and write less. You may need to complete a few drafts before submitting final paper. Format: Pay attention to grammar and writing quality; use grammar-check and spell-check software . Use APA format for citations (in body of text) and references (at end of text). Be sure to number your pages and double space . Include a title page with your name and a title. Format: Number your answers so I know which question you are answering (e.g., 1A, 1B, or 2). Required: You must provide at least two citations from course texts or electronic readings. Some questions specifically require a citation for full credit (e.g., question 1B); others do not. I recommend erring on the side of using too many citations rather than not enough. Required: Be sure to use clear and concrete examples for all questions. Answers without examples will not receive full credit.   Answer these questions. Be sure to number your questions. 1. Learning about yourself and your culture.    5 points If you have access to your recordings, feel free to use your recorded responses to questions from beginning of the semester, or simply recall your learning by reading earlier papers or simply thinking back to the beginning of class. Compare how you responded then with how you might respond today if asked the same questions. Indicate on your exam whether you have access to your recording or not. a. What have you learned about yourself and your culture over the course of this semester? b. Provide at least one example that illustrates this learning. c. How does this learning connect to our course content? Be specific. For this answer, you must include at least one citation from course readings, handouts, PowerPoints or any course document that you think supports your answer. . 2. Your social identities and privilege. 5 points
2 Consider your social identities (e.g., race, ethnicity, social class, sexual orientation, gender, disability, religion, nationality, or any other identity you find important to you). a. Select one of these identities that you feel gives you privilege. b. Give a very specific example of how this privilege is experienced. For example, describe a circumstance or event that has happened to you personally that illustrates this area of privilege. 3. World view. 5 points a. Describe the difference between individualistic and collective cultures. These terms are described in the Marsigilia, Kulis, and Lechuga-Pena text, and were discussed in class lecture and PowerPoint, and are illustrated in several narratives in the Guo and Vulchi text. b. Indicate whether you lean more toward individualist or collective cultural orientation. Why do you think this is the case? c. Give a specific example from your own experience that illustrates this cultural trait. d. Connect your experience and understanding of world view to a course reading, handout or PowerPoint lecture. You must include a citation for full credit on this answer. 4. Culturally grounded social work development plan 10 points As mandated by the NASW Code of Ethics , you must be a culturally competent social worker. Our text explains “culturally grounded social work” as related to cultural competence, and you may use either the term “culturally grounded” or “culturally competent” in this test. What is your plan to become a culturally grounded social work professional? Write your own Culturally Grounded Social Work Development Plan here. If you are not a social work major, consider what it means to be “culturally competent” or “culturally grounded” in another discipline. To help you write this plan, answer each of these questions in order: a. Define in your own words what it means to be a “culturally grounded social worker” according to Marsiglia, Kulis, and Lechuga-Pena. I direct your attention to Chapters 7 & 11 in which concepts such as narratives, social and political context, consciousness and liberation, hypothesis testing, dynamic sizing, and culturally specific expertise are all discussed. These concepts will help you define this term. You must include a citation to the Marsiglia, Kulis, & Lechuga-Pena text . To be clear, include a page number. b. Think about: a) your recorded answers or your recollection of your answers to the questions posed at beginning of course, b) your social identities and areas where you may hold privilege or experience disadvantage, c) your family heritage (as described in your family heritage paper) and d) your assessment of collective vs. individualistic world view (see question 3 above). How does your experience so far in each of these areas help provide a strong foundation for your developing future as a social worker or in another field? In what ways do these same experiences raise challenges to your
3 future professional social work or other practice? Select only one or two ways to describe these here. c. Based on the above reflection, write a brief plan to build on your own strengths to improve your cultural competence during your remaining time as a social work student or in another major. For example, if you think you need to learn more about your own culture, how will you seek this? If you think you need to learn more about individualistic or collective cultures, how will you seek this? If your ability to communicate across diverse cultures or social identities seems weak to you, how will you improve in this area? Make a thoughtful and specific plan based on how you asses your learning needs right now. General statements will not be graded with full credit . Be specific. If you choose, you may conclude this section with a brief list of actions that you intend to take in order to develop increased cultural competence. Remember ~ be specific, not general. Also, it is better to outline a few small but concrete actions that you can reasonably accomplish than it is to outline grand plans that are not feasible. I will evaluate the quality of your plan on the thoughtfulness and specificity of your reflection.
