Jimenez 1 Nicole Jimenez Professor Regine Darius ENC1102 18 July 2023 A Truthful Look at NFL Regulations, Defending their Precariousness. A simple decision can have a considerable impact on the life of a person. In this case, the NFL is threatening the lives of its players by failing to generate measures to prevent concussions and in the case of their presence, control them. As for right now, the thesis that I have built for the discussion and research of this topic is "The most prestigious sport in the United States, American football, demonstrates a considerable danger to players within the National Football League (NFL) on account of the elevated risk of concussions and the development of extensive health complications, it is important to consider and regulate with specific measures these risks for the health of players." The thesis is focused on understanding and signaling all aspects to demonstrate the impact that concussions can have on the life of players and the development of appropriate measures for the true prevention and elimination of this serious condition. In spite of this, according to the NFL itself and other entities, concussions pose no danger to players' lives, and the establishment of measures for preventing them has progressed significantly. First, a compendium of experts specialized in the Football Sports Medicine area conducts a study on each of the stages covered by the Concussion Protocol. Gary Solomon, Ph.D., and manager of this area in the NFL mentions that these measures are taken in "Offseason and Preseason Activities," "The Game Day Concussion Surveillance Team," "Game Day Concussion Protocols and Procedures," and "Return-to -Participation," which are the stages of a general game of American football. In his view, this is handled as a checklist or filter, where if a player
Jimenez 2 meets the requirements and is not in grave condition, he can resume playing (Jacobi et al. 272- 273). This list is public to the sports community and is considered illustrative for the ease of understanding its players, measurers, and managers. According to this study, the management of this protocol achieved a 23% reduction in concussions between 2015 and 2019 (Jacobi et al. 274). There has been a significant reduction in injuries because of the changes in the rules of the game and the improved equipment, all resulting from the education of players, teams, and participants, as well as the creation of a monetary fund to provide treatment for these injuries. However, in the long-term study by Samuel Walton, et al. on the effects of concussions on brain health, he refers that poor attention to a player who presents this injury not only has momentary effects but also marks his health for his entire life. In medical and percentage terms, it has been shown that 71.2% of players develop chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which means that the protocols do not work for the prevention and treatment of a concussion (Walton et al. 1189). As much as the player's diagnosis may be defined, it is more worrying what will happen to his career and well-being after a concussion, since alterations are perceived in his behavior, mental stability, and physical health. The authors mention that it is necessary for the NFL to consider that the effects on the health of the players represent greater problems than financial interests for its regulation, in addition to the fact that the protocols clearly need improvement for the new generations of players (1200). In the second instance, as an application of the concussion management protocol, a review done by the University Wire of the measurements used to treat an injured player considers that the NFL and Dolphins took the appropriate measures following the concussion that Tua Tagovailoa developed (Souza and Smith). More specifically, the player is forced out of the game and to receive treatment by personnel and independent neurotrauma consultants
Jimenez 3 provided by the NFL. Hence, the conclusion is that despite not suffering from severe trauma, the player does not require incapacitation and can return to his normal activities. The NFL proposes that medical reviews make the appropriate study to confirm that there is no presence of any potential head trauma and with its proper diagnosis the necessary information and prevention is acquired. However, according to a report by CNN, the measures taken in this situation are questionable. With the support of the compendium of information by experts, CNN exposes that the measures proposed by the NFL are not necessary to care for players before and after a concussion. First, when interviewing an NFL executive, he says that "a lot of the spotters, the trainers, the doctors had gotten a bit, quote, lackadaisical when it came to evaluating these players for a concussion," which suggests that they recognize weaknesses from within (Marquardt, et al.). In addition, in the report, they take the opinion of an external expert which is Elizabeth Cohen, CNN Senior Medical Correspondent, who briefly exposes all the medical risks to which the player was exposed in the concussion and all the signs after the deficient assessment medical that led to this injury is a considerable neurological issue due to the ataxia. The Correspondent defines ataxia as “an abnormality of balance, stability, motor coordination, or dysfunctional speech,” of which the player presented the majority and still did not receive the proper treatment (Marquardt, et al.). Therefore, the management protocol proposed by the NFL continues to be precarious to protect the health and life of its players. Generally speaking, it is necessary to acknowledge that the NFL has provided protocols for the prevention and protection of concussions, but these protocols are currently deficient and urgently need to be improved. It is important to note that suitable protocols cannot only provide the players with a higher quality of life, but they also reduce problems for the NFL and reduce

Jimenez 4 the amount of money the league must pay out to the players in case of an injury. Likewise, from a medical point of view, it substantially brings down the number of brain problems and mental health issues in society, thus allowing for a healthier community.
