SWK5026 E-JOURNAL WEEK 1 EMILY WILLIAMS Date: 2024-01-12 Total hours completed this week: 20 Agency/Site name: Bristol Hospice MSW site supervisor: Amanda Beda Course: SWK 5026 Summary of experiences this week including client/project assignments completed this week: Attended client visits and conducted phone calls to family members to provide updates and support. Learning goals from your learning contract addressed this week (must enter at least 2): 1. Gain an understanding of how diversity and different characteristics shape human experience and have an effect on the formation of identity. 2. Discuss biases and identify 2 situations with clients when working at this site where it was necessary to work through the biases. Share the date and length of this week's supervision: 01/12/24 one hour 7:30 am-8:30 am How have course discussions and materials been integrated in your practicum experience this week (provide two specific examples): 1. Amanda and I worked to identify the ways we were thinking globally and acting locally with every patient we interacted with. 2. Amanda and I discussed the ways Micro, Macro, and Mezzo social work comes into play when working with clients on hospice services. Identify Social Work Skills/Theory used this week (provide two specific examples): This week we discussed Brofrenbrenners Ecological systems theory and how human development weighs on the systems that come in contact with our environment. For example, Peggy the client discussed in my discussion post is a Caucasian american who was raised middle class and married military. These systems in her life have changed the way she progressed in life she is very calm trusting and appreciative of our services. She resides in an upper class assisted living that she pays out pocket for. Example is another patient, we will call him, "Walter" is a native American, raised in poverty, and did not have access to public school. He discovered alcohol early in life and continues to drink heavily. He is now living homeless and receiving our services in a tent behind a local business. He is often angry and manipulative with staff. The systems and factors that come into play in their past has changed their development and life course. Discuss one application of the NASW Code of Ethics (values, ethical dilemmas, etc.) that was experienced this week: With the above examples in mind, Amanda and I discussed the NASW ethical value of Dignity and Worth of a Person. As a social worker, it is important to treat each individual with respect, while being mindful of their differences. It is important for Amanda and I to treat both Peggy and Walter equally regardless of their situation and their socioeconomic differences. National Association of Social Workers. (2017). NASW code of ethics. Retrieved January 12, 2024, from https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English
How did you employ self-awareness, self-care and/or professionalism this week? (Provide a specific example): This week was extremely difficult for me as I had a recent death in the family and was navigating my own grief. This week I paid special attention to self-care and my own mental compacity. I utilized breathing techniques to assist with some anxiety I was experiencing as well as taking time away from work, school, and being a mom when I needed to. Competencies used this week: 1,2,3,4,6,8 Future plans for your continued learning at your placement (provide specific examples): Next week we have plans to meet with some new patients so that I can gain more experience with biopsychosocial assessments and the process from the beginning of hospice care.
