Report
According to the data provided by this map, there have been zero robberies in the city of Port Richey within the past 90 days, but this map also lacks all data for the city of Port Richey. So, for the use of data, I decided to investigate Lowell Massachusetts where one of the Port Richey police officers is from. Four robberies took place in this area within the last 90 days. Three as to which are grouped as far as where they took place. Two was an unarmed robbery. Another one was an armed robbery. While the last one was an unarmed assault with the intent to rob someone. The intended audience for the use of this map is the public due to the user-friendly surface of the map and the fact that it does not give unforeseeable information about the incident to the public. Also, in the title it states "helping you build a safer community" which could indicate that the person viewing the map must live within the community and not every police officer works in the same community that they live within. Also, while the map does provide a street, date, and time of the incident it does not provide an address as though the person who created the map is trying to protect the members of the public from other members of the public. It also provides the agency that dealt with the robbery, most of which happened on a Wednesday. The map also allows a person to look up their address, which is a good indicator of a person's personal use. The information that I would use to provide more context to the map is by allowing some information that might not jeopardize the case to be added to the map. Crime mapping can be used to help reduce the number of crimes that are occurring as well as increase the safety of members of the public. It allows law enforcement agencies to plan their patrol routes and utilize resources in the areas that need them the most based on a risk assessment. It also allows police departments to go from reactive policing to initiative-taking policing. "A community crime map can help officers make informed decisions about resource allocation, patrol routes, and targeted interventions by visually representing the locations and types of crimes. Meanwhile, integrating data from various
sources, such as police records, witness reports, and social media, allows agencies to gain insights into the factors contributing to crime in a specific area. Lawmakers and police can use this information to develop focused crime prevention programs and strengthen community engagement. Additionally, crime mapping can aid in evaluating the effectiveness of implemented policies and measures, allowing for continuous improvement in law enforcement strategies" (Crime Door, 2023). Crime mapping can allow for a better opportunity to be aware of local crime patterns as well as being able to foster community responsibility. Crime mapping can help with communication between law enforcement and the communities that they serve. As well as providing an opportunity for transparency and trust to be built within the community. It also encourages members of the public to aid in the process of crime prevention. The icon of the robbery logo can be misleading as it is someone trying to seal their identity which is not always the case in a robbery and the belief that someone trying to hide their identity always occurs during a robbery can be harmful when someone does get robbed.
