Poverty threatens not only those who live with its relentless hardships, but it also poses a real threat to our nation’s stability and economic future, to that fact it creates the class of jobless people who are already poor but since they want to strive in life they may end up engaging in risky behaviors that can cause the increasing number of crimes and immoral acts in the societies as most of the people are not able to afford different services but also some of the children who grow up in poverty are more likely to drop out from schools. As a result of the increasing trends of poverty, the government adopted a program called the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) in 1935. The program had been placed under the Social Security Act of 1935 and its main aim was to assist families by providing them with federal cash (Kurzman, P. (2013, September 03). However, these funds were not adequate and catered for the relief costs only. Therefore, the general welfare of the people was not adequately addressed. This led to the people becoming homeless. According to Social Welfare Policy in a Changing World, "Social security is credited with lifting many American workers and their families out of poverty” (Lane et al., 2019). Although this program helps low-income families, it is typically only advantageous to those who are of older age. These programs are intended to provide temporary assistance.Yet, turned into longer resources for families. Ultimately sometimes it isn’t enough for families especially for single parent families who are often out of work. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, also known as TANF, is a federally-funded program that is run by states providing limited cash assistance to parents and their children who have a very low income. This program is only limited to certain people and it provides some assistance to parents who only receive a small income or no income at all and very few assets for a long period of time. Although the program is designed to support low-income families, particularly in maintaining determinants of health, some of its features can negatively impact people’s health and these Safety net and legal protection programs in America still need improvement to help low-income citizens. Fighting poverty is obviously a very important part of the social work profession. The first line of the National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics’ preamble reads “The primary mission of the social work
profession is to enhance human well-being…with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty ( Congress, E. (2013, September 03). Thus much of a social worker’s effort is directed at fighting poverty. Congress, E. (2013, September 03). Codes of Ethics. Encyclopedia of Social Work.
