ASSIGNMENT #1: RESEARCH TOPIC and QUESTIONS In our society, a person or group is measured and placed into a category that determines their quality of life. Socioeconomic status (SES) is measured by a combination of education, income, and occupation according to the American Psychological Association (APA). These measurements reflect the quality of life as a subjective perception of social class and social status. Socioeconomic status can affect our society in significant ways that can contribute to how we function as people, including physical and mental health. SES is measured by a composite score and then organized into three categories: low SES, middle SES, and high SES (NCES, 2015). According to the National Center for Education Statistics, some factors such as parental level of income and area of residence can affect students’ SAT performance. This topic is interesting because SES can determine the quality of education and resources that are available to the student. Personal interest and experience led me to choose this topic which can substantially affect the quality of life of an individual and their education level. I believe people should care because there is a negative correlation between lower SES students and low SAT scores, due to the lack of concentration and resources. I believe that every individual deserves equal and equitable opportunities and resources to assist them in achieving their educational goals. I am aware of my values and strive to achieve neutrality within my research. Research questions: 1. How does socioeconomic status impact student's SAT scores? 2. How can a low socioeconomic status impact student's graduation rate? 3. How can socioeconomic status influence access to quality education? 4. How does parental socioeconomic status affect student academic performance? 5. How can socioeconomic status influence student’s educational opportunities and outcomes? Hypotheses: 1. Having a high socioeconomic status, students can have access to quality resources which can positively impact their SAT scores. 2. Students with a low socioeconomic status will have difficulties accessing educational opportunities and resources that can hinder graduation rates. 3. Students with high-SES backgrounds will have access to highly funded schools, more experienced faculty, and better facilities which can result in higher-quality education than students associated with low-SES backgrounds. 4. Parents with a high-SES background, their children will have significant academic success. 5. Students with a low-SES often have distracting factors, under-resourced school systems, and unstable living conditions. The Independent Variable is low socioeconomic. The dependent variable is can hinder graduation rates. Direction is negative.
