CHLD 5: OBSERVATION 1 For this assignment students will visit and become familiar with an early childhood center-based program OR a family child-care home site that serve children 3-5 years of age. Students will examine their findings and evaluate for developmentally appropriate practices (reference chapter 9 prior to your observation). Each task below must be included in the written summary Part 1: Program Description   Site Supervisor/Directors name: Observation site & observation site address: Date of observation and time in & out of your observation: Who was present during the observation (how many teachers/adults, how many children) Center ratio and licensing information (i.e., Title 22, Title 5)
Part 2: Classroom Environment Observation Indoor space Directions: List and describe observed evidence for indicators below using anecdotal record method. For any indicator not met, provide recommendations on how the program could meet each missing indicator. Adapted from ECERS-3 Indicator Yes No Observation/Recommendation 1 There is enough space for different activities throughout the day, such as: mealtimes, group times, and free play. 2 Room has some direct natural lighting that shine through windows or other means. 3 Ventilation in the room can be controlled through either opening windows or use of room fan. 4 Natural light in the room can be controlled by either adjusting blinds or shades/curtains, etc. 5 Space in the environment is accessible to children and adults with varying degrees of mobilities (i.e., ramps and handrails for people needing them access for wheelchairs and walkers; push-plate doorbell instead of small button). 6 Indoor surfaces are easy to clean and safe from injury.
Room arrangement for play and learning Directions: List and describe observed evidence for indicators below using anecdotal record method. For any indicator not met, provide recommendations on how the program could meet each missing indicator. Adapted from ECERS-3 Indicator Yes No Observation/Recommendation 1 Environment is arranged so that classroom pathways generally do not interrupt play. 2 The environment has at least 5 interest centers, including a cozy area that is protected from active play. 3 Environment is arranged where teachers can adequately supervise all children visually 4 All play areas provide accessible to children with disabilities. 5 Environment is arranged where quiet and noisy play areas are all physically separated from one another, not just by furniture. 6 Play areas that need special requirements are conveniently equipped (i.e., art and sand/water interest centers have easily cleaned surfaces and sink near-by; block center has rug to reduce noise).

7 Centers that require more space such as blocks and dramatic play, have ample amounts of space to accommodate each type of play. Transitions and waiting times Directions: List and describe observed evidence for indicators below anecdotal record method. For any indicator not met, provide recommendations on how the program could meet each missing indicator. Adapted from ECERS-3 Indicator Yes No Observation/Recommendation 1 Teachers provide children with a warning that clean-up time is coming. 2 Children move from one activity to the next with minimal redirection. 3 Teachers supervise the children during transitions and follow up carefully as needed. 4 Teachers are making sure that all children are productively engaged during transitions times. 5 Children are encouraged to move from one activity to the other after clean up while other are still cleaning up.
6 Transition times are short, and children are not expected to wait longer than 3 minutes for next activity. Part 3: Evaluate and summarize your findings Summarize and analyze the data collected for part 1 & 2 above. In your summary include a description of the learning environment (i.e., how the room is arranged) and describe what you saw in terms of the principles of Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) learning environments (reference in your textbook, pgs. 271-280). In your analysis describe how the program offers or could offer quality care for children 3-5 years of age (reference in your textbook, pgs. 61-62).
