Chi-Square Test Angelique Vasquez School of Social Work, Capella University SWK5015: Advanced Statistics, Research, and Program Evaluation Professor Christopher Mallet May, 2024
Chi-Square Test The Redmond Child Protective Services wants to compare the effectiveness of two programs provided to parents who were identified as being at risk for abusing or neglecting their children. The parents either participated in a 10-week parenting course or 10 weeks of family therapy sessions. The evaluator compared 50 parents who participated in the parenting course and 45 parents who participated in the therapy program. To evaluate the effectiveness of the program, the evaluator measured if any of the parents were suspected of abuse or neglect one year after completing services. The Redmond local government is cautious about financing family therapy sessions due to the cost, compared to solely parenting classes. The statistical analysis of the programs showed the following result:
A chi-test was conducted to determine if a relationship occurred between the type of intervention and the outcomes. The sample size consisted of 95 cases, of these cases 50 received parenting classes and 45 received family therapy. The statistical analysis shows that more parents who received Parenting Class had a higher number of reports of abuse rather than the parents who went to Family Therapy. The Redman local government is concerned about the price of family therapy, however, the statistics show that Family Therapy is a better solution for reducing abuse charges/allegations. Following the ten-week intervention, 9.574% of individuals who completed family therapy had an active case for possible abuse or neglect, compared to 25.532% who received the parenting classes. Comparing the breakdown of the totals for suspicion of abuse consisted of 47.872% of individuals who completed family therapy and 52.128% who completed parenting classes. For future funding, the data shows that the program should take funding and gear it toward helping families get into family therapy.
