Running head: 7-1 7-1 project Shykia cranford Southern New Hampshire University SCS 100 perspective of in social science Ashraf Esmail, Ph.D October 15,2023
7-1 2 Part one: Advertisement analysis In this section, you will analyze the four advertisements you selected earlier in the course. Use social science approaches to gather specific information from them. As you conduct your analyses, think about what these advertisements say about the companies selling the products, the organizations making the ads, the people purchasing the products, and society as a whole. 1.Determine how individuals and groups are represented in the advertisements. What audiences are the advertisements trying to reach? What unspoken or underlying messages do you think the ads might be sending? Google: Body Type the individual in the ad appears to be pleased with the size of their bodies despite what society says about people who are bigger. o The actions taken by the individuals in the ad are dancing to music that brings them body positivity. Pantene: #SeeBeautyNotGender The ads show that beauty has a gender and represent all genders to show beauty has no face. o The people in this ad are doing everyday things like job interviews or styling hair to show that they are beautiful no matter what.
7-1 3 Promote Iceland: Let It Out! The individuals in the ad have been under a lot of stress in their day-to-day lives and are looking for somewhere to chill out and let off some stress. o The individuals in this ad are screaming out of the work and or personal life stress they are having. Dove, Sky Witness: Empowering Idents The women in this ad are in different levels of power. They have to face their hardship somehow but still show that they are the same. o The actions in this ad aren’t specific other than the women using Dove products. They are trying to show that they are the same as everyone else, even though they have disabilities. 2. Identify stereotyped group behavior in the advertisements. A. What are the advertisements saying about the behavior of the groups represented in them? B. What underlying messages do the advertisements send about the group behaviors in them and the audiences they assume will be consuming the products? The group of people in this advertisement is showing people of different sizes and genders that love their bodies for who they are and not what society wants them to look like.

7-1 4 o The stereotype in the advertisement was that they were all big people dancing, which, in most cases, people assume that because you are bigger, you can't do anything that a smaller person can do. The people in this advertisement seem like everyday people who are stressed out with life and need a getaway to relieve their stress. o The stereotype in this ad is that they are the everyday working class that doesn't ever catch a break, and in society, it is sometimes assumed that because you have a good job and are well off, you don't have your stress to deal at the end of the day. The group of people in this advertisement are different women with different disabilities. o The stereotype in this advertisement is that women of color or women with disabilities are not the same as everyone else in the world. The people in this advertisement are mainly women, including those of the LGBTQ+ community, who can do the roles men can. o The stereotype in this advertisement is that women of color or women with disabilities are not the same as everyone else. 3. Determine how different cultures are represented in the advertisements. A. How do the ads represent culture? Are any stereotypes being used? B. What unspoken or underlying messages do you think the ads might be sending about culture? Google Body Type uses people of different cultures, races, and backgrounds to promote their social media platform with varying types of dance and body types
7-1 5 of all shapes, sizes, styles, and ages. While I see men dancing in the video, none of the men sharing their insecurities. This pertains to the stereotype that men should be "masculine" and hold in their emotions. Pantene See Beauty Not Gender- this advertisement focuses on the transgender community, addressing the stereotype / social issue that "transgender" women cannot do what"women" do. Supporting not only transgender women but all women with the statement "See Beauty Not Gender." The advertisement begins by showing most women in an unideal situation and overcoming the obstacle of promoting gender equality. Promote Ice Land "Let it out"- The advertisement refers to American culture as it begins with one of the actresses watching the news with the headline, "More bad news. The advertisement does show men and women of different ages. The end of the advertisement shows these same men and women who seem to be holding in their frustration, "Letting out their bottled-up emotions" by yelling, and then their facial expressions seem to be relieved. This advertisement sends a message using a social media platform to travel to Ice Land and record themselves yelling and posting it on their social media platform being promoted. This advertisement uses others' frustrations and build-up of emotions to promote itself. The advertisement challenges the culture of beauty. Popular opinion dictates a standard of physical attractiveness in society, but this advertisement emphasizes the beauty of being different. This advertisement portrays a wide range of women, including those with disabilities, tattoos, scars, and hair colors. Due to their
7-1 6 willingness to go against societal norms and make their way in professional fields, women symbolize empowerment and strength. 4. Discuss how ethical issues in the social sciences-impact advertising. Look beyond the economic effects of advertisements and consider the following questions to help address this prompt: A. Do the ads confirm biases? Do they rely on stereotypes? Do they support social change? Do they stay neutral on social or political movements? Should they get involved in social or political movements? B. Why might it be important for advertisers and companies in a diverse world to be as inclusive and unbiased as possible? Biases are unique to each consumer. Among my chosen ads, two depict the empowerment of women. Some women might believe that being at home to raise a family is the best way to live, while others might feel very inspired by the advertisements, particularly if they look or act like the women featured in these ads. Depending on one's own biases, everyone will interpret an advertisement differently. There is a keen sense of social change in most of the ads. Despite being portrayed in those ads as women of authority and power, women have not always had the chance to be recognized, and they still struggle to be. In those two advertisements, the advertisers try to change perceptions of women. In today's advertising, companies have an exceedingly challenging time avoiding bias and being inclusive. The world we live in today is rapidly changing. There has been a growing backlash against conventional ways of doing things in recent decades. Increasingly, women are climbing up the corporate ladder and speaking out, while the LGBTQ+ community is gaining more equality. In today's world,

7-1 7 social media outlets are becoming increasingly prevalent, allowing biased, sexist, homophobic, or other offensive ads to be seen worldwide in minutes. These ads negatively affect a company's income and support. Part Two: Social Science Questions The answers that come from an analysis can often led to more questions. In this section, you will use the information you found from your advertisement analyses to ask a broader social science question. You do not need to answer the question, but you do need to talk about how you might study your advertisements using the skills and knowledge you’ve gained in this course. 5. Propose a finalized social science research question based on your analysis of the advertisements you chose. A. Think beyond the minor details from your analysis and consider what the ads say about individuals, groups, institutions, or society. B. What is the meaning or significance of the ads? For example, you might be interested in ethical issues related to advertising. You might want to explore how current events influence the content of ads. Or maybe you would like to ask how common themes in ads could impact an audience’s self-conc ept. Would women be valued differently in American society if our perception of power in male-dominated fields was shifted between genders? o Women have always been a hot topic in terms of gender equality. When it comes to certain things, it is still difficult for women to achieve equality. Despite their efforts, they still face discrimination in male-dominated fields. Even when women
7-1 8 have the necessary knowledge and experience to do the job, they are often overlooked. The issue of gender egalitarianism should not be a barrier to women entering any profession. Women have struggled to achieve gender equality over the years due to societal assumptions about what they should be or do. It's time to shift this attitude. 6. Discuss how you used a  social science perspective to develop your research question. A. Explain how you used social science concepts, perspectives, or approaches to write your research question. Taking a social science perspective requires making educated judgments based on our perception of our society and the relationships among its members. Human behavior is usually understood and understood by a community based on empirical theories, challenging what is already known or preconceived. My research question addressed how women's portrayal in advertisements can influence society's portrayal of women using a sociological perspective. I looked at how advertisements often portray women as objects or objects of concern and how these stereotypes can influence people's perceptions of women. The effect of women's emotions on their careers and other aspects is also discussed. In addition, I looked at how messages about women could influence people's self-concepts and societal outcomes. Is it essential to understand the portrayals of women in the media? I looked at how advertisements could affect a person's self-concept and how current events could influence their content. The answer to my research question will have different impacts depending on the individual's values and convictions. Inequalities between men and women are among the most prevalent forms of power distribution. Women are portrayed as impotent, obedient, and accommodating. On the
7-1 9 other hand, men are strong (outspoken, in control, and able to assert their will), particularly when it comes to women. As a result of these gender roles, power inequalities are evident. Women's ability to participate in decision-making is often impeded by the belief that women are unable to speak up in public or that it is neither 'natural' nor "natural" for them to do so. As a result of this research question, society would be able to see women from a new angle and evaluate these theories. Men, women, and the entire community will understand that to create a harmonious society without sacrificing one gender will take both genders. 7. Explain one major development in the social sciences that may have influenced your research question. A. The major development could include an important event, a discovery, the rejection of an old theory, acceptance of a new theory, or a change in culture that affected the field. B. How might these changes in thinking and research have affected the conclusions drawn about your advertisements and the questions asked about them? My research question has been influenced by recent social science research, such as the #MeToo campaign. Sexual harassment and assault against women have become more prevalent due to this trend. It has also raised concerns about the unfair treatment that women are often subjected to in society. Sexual harassment was not only brought to light by the movement but also by embedded gender stereotypes and

7-1 10 representational gaps between men and women ("Measuring the effect of #MeToo on gender equality in Hollywood," 2021). Women were empowered to stand up and assert their rights worldwide by the movement. Part Three: Reflection In this section, you will reflect on your experience using social science perspectives to analyze advertisements and ask research questions. You will consider how your personal beliefs, assumptions, and values influenced the question you developed, and explain why knowledge of the social sciences is important to understanding yourself, other people, and the world around you. 8. Describe how  your assumptions, beliefs, and/or values   influenced the way you analyzed your advertisements. A. Consider how your perceptions of the social world may have influenced the way you viewed your advertisements. Did it/they cause you to make assumptions about the people in the ads? Did you focus on certain advertisements, or parts of advertisements as a result? How might someone with a different set of beliefs view your advertisements? Even if we do not believe it, the world around us and the way we read advertisements are influenced by our beliefs, assumptions, and values. Considering our upbringing, we can gain much insight into how we perceive marketing for specific brands. Advertisements by a brand or company, regardless of their intended message, may negatively affect us if we have an unfavorable opinion about them. Alternatively, an advertisement by a
7-1 11 company or brand we like can subconsciously influence us to assume that the advertisement's message is appropriate automatically.  9. Discuss how social science perspectives or approaches could be used to process information. A. Focus on the social science perspectives or approaches you feel would be the most beneficial for analyzing the information you are presented with every day. B. For example, would analyzing ads on social media from the political science perspective help you better understand a company’s political stance on issues? What perspective would help you determine if there was a possible link between the length of a commercial and its intended audience? Would examining an ad targeted at caregivers from a sociological perspective help you understand the meaning of family in various cultures? We make informed decisions in social science by analyzing our world and the relationships among individuals within it. It uses empirical methods to understand and interpret human behavior in a community, often challenging what is already known or preconceived. When gathering data, a social scientist collects raw data for designing models, gathers data about theories or models from web sources, and reviews related research literature. In addition, they analyze the available data and assess its relevance. Sociology and psychology are among the most critical aspects when digesting data today. When watching commercials. We can use sociology and psychology to determine whether the advertisement is trying to affect a particular demographic group or has subliminal messages rather than treating it as a product. These two factors can help us determine whether an advertisement has a tangible benefit or is intended to sell services.
7-1 12 Describe how seeing the world from a social science perspective can positively affect your personal life. 10. Explain how looking at the world from social science perspectives may impact your personal life. A. How might using social science skills help you process and understand the information you use in your life? By understanding the world from a social science perspective, we can be more informed, and compassionate and understand each other personally. People behave in specific ways due to their biases, feelings, and thoughts toward subjects, which the social sciences can explain. We, as a whole, can gain an understanding by seeing others' behavior and how they present themselves. 11. Explain how examining issues from social science perspectives may affect your community relationships. A. Think about challenges or opportunities in your community. How might applying social science perspectives to those issues benefit your community? Examining issues from social science perspectives can help us understand our community better and promote empathy and understanding. It allows us to see different viewpoints and find common ground. 12. Discuss how being more informed about the social sciences may help you understand global contemporary issues.

7-1 13 A. Consider how understanding the ways social scientists examine human behaviors could influence the way you approach global challenges and questions. Being more informed about the social sciences helps us understand global contemporary issues by providing insights into the complexities of societies, cultures, and human behavior. It allows us to analyze the root causes, impacts, and potential solutions to these issues.
