Sade Rolle SWK 5004 Week 3 April 29th, 2024 Week 3 Role Play Reflection For our first reflection role play session the participants included myself, along with Ashley and Gemma. We only had three out of the four members due to Sarita having a family emergency during this week. For my role play session in which I played the social worker my client was played by Gemma. Following this I played the role of Maria, the client, for Ashley and finally I observed Gemma's session as a social worker in which Ashley played the client. I felt most comfortable playing the social worker which was surprising because I was so nervous to do so prior to starting. While being the social worker I think I very much enjoyed connecting with the client and using the knowledge I had to suggest solutions to the issues they were experiencing. I learned that it is best to read and then re-read a client's information prior to meeting because I kept forgetting small details like the ages of the children or their names. While playing the client I learned that it isn’t so much social anxiety that makes me nervous in new interactions but more so the fear of saying the wrong thing or not being understood. I learned this by noticing the same nervousness I felt in my peers when they had to be the social worker. Lastly as the observer, I noticed just how many long pauses can happen when a client is meeting with
the social worker so to mitigate that I think its best to plan out the different things you have to discuss so that you don't forget anything and can keep the conversation moving efficiently. I think that two skills that really came in handy this week were, conveying empathy and eliminating bias. I learned that as a social worker we must try to connect with the client and show them that we are a safe space. This is so they can open up to us as well as to show them that even if they have had a negative experience in the past we are a fresh start and only have their best interest at heart. I also learned more about eliminating bias because at first reading the case scenario I was a bit judgemental about some of the choices Maria made but once we started the role play and you make her into a real person you start to understand that every client is a human being just like we are and thus deserve the same grace we expect people to give us. Two skills that I definitely need to work on is maintaining eye contact and not using words like “ummm” or “mhhhmmm” too much. Looking back at the video I noticed how often we all in the role play used words like this and it was a lot. I think this makes us look a bit unprofessional so I do want to work on it. The eye contact issue I noticed is something i struggle with in my day to day life as well so I’ve been trying to force myself to make more eye contact in daily conversations to overcome this habit.
