Discussion Post #1 Hello everyone, I’m Richard Ralston but I go by RJ. I am a first year college student here at ASU with limited higher education experience. I am originally from Eminence, Missouri but I am currently living in San Diego, CA where I am stationed onboard the USS John L Canley. I am a political science major, and my interests academically align with that discipline, although I am also interested in meteorology. I don’t have a great deal of faith any politics or human beings’ ability to govern a group without developing a belief that the governing body is somehow deserving of higher social state over those they govern. So, some of my other interests are working out, playing violent video games where aggression may be released in a healthy way and playing with my children. I am excited to continue my educational growth with all of you through this course. As a member of the United States Navy, it is hard for me to align to political groups without coming of as an endorser for such a group, so I am not actively aligned nor bound to any political group nor party. It is important for me to begin building such ties and I am reaching out into my local community to find like minded progressives who do not hold American Liberal Democratic Party ideals to be something blindly adhered to. I am currently involved in an honors society through an ASU online chapter as well a band booster club member for my daughter’s middle school band. I am a registered mentor and coach for an online advocacy group for Sailor’s and a stress management coach with the Navy. I use mostly online technologies to communicate due to an often taxing requirement to move around or deploy. Social media platforms and text based technologies are my primary means to communicate, but I much prefer face to face verbal communication. Ideas for Profile Project, San Diego’s Citizens for Progressive Pluralism A grassroots group of citizens with no formal agenda made up of intellectuals and business owners is the direct micro-organization that I wish to being building my political views around. This group has little online profile and is made up mostly of older San Diegans who still believe in town hall governance and the power of voice communications. They are difficult to capture using electronic devices and little of the organization exists online. However, this type of profile case meets the courses agenda of forcing my hand to conduct in depth research into a very small organization that I cannot simply cut and paste information from an online database. San Diego Progressive Alliance A Facebook account, a failed political candidate and one of the last conservative small pollical groups still promoting in the San Diego area, this alliance would serve well as an organization to profile for this project. They have a small but notable footprint online, with information and members names available for further research. This group again aligns with the course goals to reach out and conduct interviews or localized research. They are a left of center political organization that values breaking away from predetermined mainstream agendas. Navy League of Coronado A unique look at how history and money maintain influence, this small town organization has unique ties to the US Navy and just lead in the commissioning of my currently assigned Ship. This group made up of usually wives of retire Naval brass, leads a strong voice in our community and is inherently pro-Navy with a political agenda that is not focused on large scale governance but localized in a field familiar to me. This group does have plenty on online material and connected to a larger Nationwide group. I have had several engagements in the pass with this group, while never officially affiliating with it. My most unique observation with this group is its ability to produce almost zero public political grandstanding but still demands of a local government and often gets its way. Alliance San Diego Similar to SDPA, ASD is a small progressive alliance with a miniscule online presence. This group differs by claiming to be slight right of center but still progressive. There is little information on this group as to a physical location as it appears to be and online entity only. I would enjoy researching this group as I feel more compelled to conservative agendas but with a progressive agenda. This group would make for an informative read as it further breaks the status quo, as with all this groups, by not adhering to national political party agendas while leaning right. They produce and governing mindset that includes pluralism but rationalized the need to simply remove labels from politically charged cultural obligations vice celebrate them. Difficult to digest a prosperous future for this group, but still a very interesting take on the political landscape of San Diego.
