Naomi Ubaldo Dr. Ariana Cortes SOCI 1301 10 March 2024 Chapter Three: Culture Summary/Description: The clip “The Young Ancestors”, we hear from Native Americans about the importance of learning their ancestral languages as they attempt to keep it from going extinct. As well as their connections to the importance of knowing the languages connected to their tribe’s culture. Connection to the Chapter: Openstax defines language as "a symbolic system of communication". (Openstax Sociology, Chapter 3, Section 2). For example, we learn from the Native Americans shown in the video that the importance of keeping their languages alive stems from the fact that they are intertwined with their cultures and customs. It also helps individuals feel linked to their tribe's culture and customs, even if they don't speak their languages as well as their elders. This clip also connects to the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis , which states that "the way that people understand the world is based on their form of language." (Openstax Sociology, Chapter 3, Section 2). In the movie, we learn about how understanding their tribe's language ties them to their culture and allows them to preserve relationships not just with their ancestors but also with other members of their tribe. Help them learn to love their family, land, God, and life.
