THE POWER OF COMMUNICATION CULTURE GOES DEEPER THAN THAT BACKDROP; THE SPECIFIC BELIEFS INGRAINED IN US AT HOME ALONG WITH SOCIETY’S CULTURE PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN SHAPING OUR BELIEFS, NORMS, VALUES AND PERCEPTIONS OF CERTAIN IDEAS AND BEHAVIORS” (WILLIAMS,2021). Different factor come into play when individuals finally decide to take their mental health into their own hands, some people often label themselves as weak when trying to come to terms with a mental health illness. Social norms can make an individual feel pressured into doing something because it is “expected”, not realizing the impact it can have on their mental health.

For example, some religions or ethnic groups might not trust or believe in Western medicine, choosing to seek support from priests, religious leaders, traditional healers, or family members instead of mental health professionals.(Njoku, A, 2020) The generation today is more open about their mental health when they are feeling depressed, angry, or even suffering from PTSD. Believing that working on your mental health is important as it plays a role in our daily lives as it can prevent someone from just doing the basic necessary things like cleaning, cooking, showering or even getting out of bed. An individual who has never suffered from mental health issues may find it difficult to relate and understand how someone can “let themselves go”.
