Hello class, There are various challenges at each stage of participant observation in field observation. The stages include direct observation, participant observation, ethnography, and covert observation. The stage that is most challenging is participant observation in my opinion. Participant observation may also be considered fieldwork in the anthropology field. Dependent on the roles, it can come down to choosing a role that vary between making the decision on the role you want to choose and knowing your position and not being a full observer participating in group activities characterized as a researcher (Bachman & Schutt, 2020). In addition to this, a covert participant will act in a similar fashion to the other group members without disclosing their research role (Bachman & Schutt, 2020). Some of the other jobs that come with completing an observation are ensuring that the effect is reactive and maintaining a relationship all while making sure that the observations are all valid. The hardest part of this would be building and sustaining research. What’s important is being enthusiastic with the information that you are reviewing. Distractions are one a million and easy to run into when you are not on topic. References Bachman, R. D., & Schutt, R. K. (2020).
