Eli Ruiz
Professor and Classmates,
Paul’s Missionary Principles and Church Planting Methods, are highly recognized and accepted by many religious organizations today. Roland Allen, penned a classic, ‘Missionary Methods: St. Paul’s or Ours? over one hundred years ago.
This book is still used in mission
classes today.
examines the method of the apostle Paul in his church planting efforts and contrasts them with the typical methods of his day. Allen spent his life ministering in India, China, and Kenya, and so brings the wisdom of personal experience as well as the sure hand of a careful exegete. While you won’t agree with every argument he makes, you must engage with them.

Allen offers the two principles which “seem to underlie all the Apostle’s practice:...(1)
that he was a preacher of Gospel, not law, and (2) that he must retire from his converts to give place for Christ” (148).
Each of these rested upon a “great faith...in the Holy Ghost, not
merely vaguely as a spiritual Power, but as a Person indwelling his converts.” (

).
In our Textbook, ‘Introducing World Missions’, by Moreau, et.al., he speaks about the secret of the Apostle’s success in founding churches, utilizing certain principles, which Roland Allen and others have kept alive for over one hundred years. “Paul’s primary concern went beyond winning people to Christ; his ministry was focused on forming communities of Christians throughout the regions he traveled as a means of spreading the gospel to the whole world.” (Moreau, et.al., 2015, p.88).
Through the years, and growing up in various churches, I have noted so many similarities to Paul’s church planting methods, if not most of them. For instance, one of my Pastors, a great preacher, won many new converts for Christ. He would then start them with
the basics, and slowly bring them up to where the rest of the church was. So the teaching was intelligible and well grasped and understood, that all would retain it, and use it. Our
Sunday School programs were taught well and the teachers discussed what they planned on teaching to make sure that it was from the bible and that they taught it so that everyone would be able to understand it. I saw my Pastor sit down with the church's deacons and trustees and discuss how the church’s money was being spent.
Baptisms, confirmations, and discipline were strictly observed. New members were asked questions to see where their spiritual lives were, and if they were ready to advance to
the next level. To me that level was Ordainment. The Pastor taught that class and did it well. After a year of classes, we were made to preach a sermon for the first time, then wait about a year before going before the Board of Pastors, of the AOG.
More questions were asked concerning the Bible and church matters. If all went well, we were ordained.
So I have to agree that I saw these principles at work in my church, together with some local principles, concerning tithes, church attendance, and keeping records of our achievements. I have used these principles and methods at my church, with great acceptance and many blessings.
