BIBL 104 Name: Kristen Phillips B IBLE S TUDY P ROJECT : O BSERVATION T EMPLATE Passage: Acts 19:11-22 A. I have read Acts 19:11-22 in both a formal translation (NASB, NRSV, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com o Yes o No B. Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. These similarities and differences should be related to the text itself rather than the translation. For example, an observation like, “The formal translation is harder to read” is not an acceptable observation because it deals with the translation itself rather than the text. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find providing that you meet the minimum amount for each one. 1. Similarity – Both translations started by saying God worked miracles through Paul, “so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick (Acts 19:12). 2. Similarity – In both translations, it spoke of Paul passing through Macedonia and Achaia to go to Jerusalem, and saying after he has been there, he must go to Rome. 3. Difference – The ESV version specified that Jewish exorcists were going to those who were possessed to invoke the name of Jesus. The NIV version just stated that “some Jews” were doing this same act. 4. Difference – In the ESV version, the Jewish exorcists said, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims” (Acts 19:13, ESV). While in the NIV version they stated, “In the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out” (Acts 19:13, NIV). 5. Difference - The ESV version stated that the man with the evil spirit in him mastered and overpowered the seven sons of Sceva, and they ran away naked and wounded. The NIV version only stated that the man overpowered them and specified that they were beaten to where they ran out naked and bleeding. C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying. 1. Main characters: (List them) Paul, Seven sons of Sceva, Timothy, and Erastus Page 1 of 3
BIBL 104 2. Plot: (50-100 words) God performed miracles through Paul, making anything touched by him able to heal the sick and remove their evil spirits. The Jews who went around to invoke the name of Jesus over those possessed would mention that it was in the name of the Jesus that Paul preached about. The seven sons of Sceva were doing this and were overpowered by a man who was possessed. Their failure to face the evil spirit caused the people of Ephesus to be fearful. Those who believed confessed their sins and those who practiced magic gave up that practice. The word of Jesus spread, and His name was held in high honor. After this, Paul went to Jerusalem and then planned to go to Rome. He also sent Timothy and Erastus to Macedonia. 3. Story structure: (50-100 words) Note: Plot and Story Structure are not the same thing (see the tutorial and student example) Introduction: God worked miracles through Paul by using handkerchiefs or aprons to heal the sick and cast away evil spirits. Inciting Incident: Jewish exorcists were using the name of Jesus whom Paul preached to cast away evil spirits from those possessed. Rising Action: The seven sons of Sceva were overpowered by a man possessed by an evil spirit. Climax: Everyone in Ephesus learned of what happened to the seven sons, and fear began to spread. Falling Action: The people who believed confessed their wrongdoings and those who practiced magic stopped. Resolution: The word of Jesus spread widely and grew in power. D. List basic observations about this passage using the “Key Question” for observation. Remember to consult and review chapters 17 and 37 in Everyday Bible Study . This will help you be more detailed in your answers to “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how.” Please be detailed and specific. 1. Who: Luke (author) Theophilus (audience) o “Evidently, both Luke and Acts were penned for a recipient named ‘Theophilus’” (Cartwright and Hulshof, page 222). Paul Seven sons of Sceva Timothy Erastus 2. What: Jews are invoking the name of Lord Jesus to cast evil spirits out of those who are possessed. The seven sons of Sceva were overpowered by a man possessed by an evil spirit. This news spread through all of Ephesus, striking fear in people. This then caused them to praise the name Jesus and spread His word. Page 2 of 3
BIBL 104 3. Where: Town of Ephesus 4. When: During Paul’s three-year visit to Ephesus, roughly around 53-55 AD 5. Why: Why did the Jewish exorcists specify “Jesus whom Paul proclaims” when casting away evil spirits? o It was said that even clothing touched by Paul was healing the sick and casting away evil spirits from people. Since Paul’s touch was so powerful to do this, they must have believed that speaking of the specific Jesus that Paul preaches about would have this same effect. Why were the seven sons of Sceva overpowered by the possessed man? o The evil spirit stated that he knew Jesus, and recognized Paul, but did not know them. Since they were not powerful like Jesus and Paul were, they easily became overpowered by the evil spirit. Why did this cause people to turn to Jesus and spread his name? o The people of Ephesus witnessed the seven sons be overpowered by the possessed man. It seemed like those who witnessed did not want the same to happen to them, so by turning to Jesus, they believed they would not be harmed. 6. How: How did God perform miracles by the hand of Paul? o He made it so that the clothing that Paul had simply touched had the power to heal the sick and drive away evil spirits. How did the seven sons of Sceva become overpowered? o The man possessed by the evil spirit told them that he did not know the sons, he only knew of Jesus and Paul. In this way, in the eyes of the evil spirit, the sons were not as powerful as Jesus or Paul. How did this news of the seven sons spread through Ephesus? o The evil spirit beat them so badly that they ran from the house naked and wounded. It can be inferred that there where those who witnessed this happening and shared it with others. Page 3 of 3
