Elaine Nassar PSY-491: Psychology and Social Change 5-2 Module Five Video Reflection November 24 th , 2023
1. Describe which aspects of psychology the interview particpants highlighted when discussing their ability to develop and adhere to goals. The participant, Josh Garrin, displayed a huge amount of self-awareness and altruism. This knowledge allowed him to explain aspects of psychology that were beneficial in developing and adhering to social change which included aspects such as compassion and empathy. I say he displays altruism because he states that he has always felt compelled to not only understand but to also help those who are dealt with injustice and are disempowered. In psychology, altruism is the belief or practice of selfless concern for the well-being of others. (Meriam-Webster, 2023) Josh Garrin also explains how through emotional intelligence which the ability is to identify and manage your emotions, as well as the emotions of others, we can have the ability to become a more compassionate society and possibly change our own biases. I personally believe if we all challenged our own biases and views and understood that there are more ways to live a life or make decisions, that the world would be a more peaceful and accepting place. 2. Describe how your understanding of motivation can promote the drive and determination required to achieve your goals. Understanding motivation and the reasoning behind my motivation can help drive me to achieve my goals and those of others during challenging times. My mother has always been a hardworking and empathetic woman and one of the things she’s always told me that stuck with me in life is that no matter what you get through, you must not have tunnel vision and to look at the bigger picture because in life, you will go through challenges quite often, no matter who you are. To me, this can be applied to our own lives when we go through things we may not see as a positive thing. For example, I was only
23 when I went through a divorce which was a very hard time for me, as I was also filing for bankruptcy due to the marriage. I did not see any positives coming from this and I had that tunnel vision my mom spoke about. Now, I am 25, almost 26 years old, and I completely agree with her statement, as I have now been the most financially stable I have been in a long time, have an amazing girlfriend and dog, am about to graduate college because I was able to push through my struggles and it taught me so many things about money and relationships and my own emotional intelligence that I never would’ve learned that early in life. I still go through struggles but my ability to push through them now is way more than ever because I look at the bigger picture. This same motto can be applied to social change, especially with the many things going on in our society today with the Black Lives Matter movement and Transgender rights, for example. I will always be an ally and voice my opinions for those who faced injustice and I know one day, this will happen because giving up is not an answer for those who experience it every day of their lives and motivation is key to getting through it.
