1 Wilczynski Text Learning Assignment #2 Brandon Weaver 10/16/2023 SPCE 680: Introduction to Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders
2 Wilczynski Text Learning Assignment #2 When reading The Practical Guide to Finding Treatments That Work for People with Autism , the text spoke about the client's repertoire and behavioral cups in Chapter 4. This chapter discussed the importance of identifying your client’s set of skills along with which skills should be enhanced through interventions. I believe that identifying the correct behaviors and treatment for our clients is important to understand for my future career. A career in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) starts with knowing our client’s skills and understanding how our clients learn. To do that, clinicians need to assess the client’s skills and continue to assess the skills on an ongoing basis. The assessment of skills is important for clinicians because identifying mastered skills compared to new skills is important for our clients to begin treatment by reinforcing socially significant behaviors. For every intervention we introduce to our clients, a prerequisite of skills must be mastered for the treatment we provide to be effective (Wilczynski, 2017). I believe that these assessments are vital for a successful career in ABA because it is one of the initial steps we take to develop our interventions. Wilczynski continues to discuss the importance of clinicians not just picking treatment off a list to try with our clients. The author discusses the importance of understanding behavioral cups to correctly select skills and interventions to use for our clients. In my current career, I find the value in introducing interventions that have far-reaching consequences. Currently, I am exposing my client to social stories and have seen how this intervention is reinforcing my client’s ability to identify types of emotion amongst self and others. I believe that the identification of client repertoire and behavioral cups will continue to be a part of a career in ABA. Wilczynski Text Learning Assignment #2
3 Chapter 11 of, The Practical Guide to Finding Treatments That Work for People with Autism, discusses the importance of progressing monitoring. Sections of this chapter presented questions that I will take away and use in my future career in ABA. Those questions are related to the way clinicians use data collection as a form of progress monitoring. I believe that the questions presented will help with my future career in ABA by understanding the importance of the right data collection method along with how frequently to collect data. Clinicians should first create an operational definition for the behavior with examples and non-examples. Defining the behavior will help with the identification of data collection because it will present how the behavior should be measured. For example, clinicians can use either continuous or discontinuous measurements to describe how often the behavior is being displayed. I find that data collection is an important part of a career in ABA because it helps with clinicians' decisions on what interventions to use for treatment based on how often the behaviors occur. As important as it is to identify behaviors and data collection methods, it is also important for clinicians to decide how often data should be collected. In my future career, I will recall the text when it presented that data should be collected on a most frequent basis that is determined by the stakeholders, client, and other interdisciplinary team members. The text supports that if data is collected frequently, it helps develop treatment on a timely basis. The lack of data would take more than months for clinicians to determine if the interventions and/or treatment are effective. I believe those wanting a career in ABA should value the importance of accurate and frequent data collection. Without data collection, clinicians cannot notice the reinforcement of socially significant behaviors in our clients. References
