Name: Mental Rotation Directions (Read all of the instructions before beginning the experiment) : 1. Navigate to the following website. https://psych.hanover.edu/javatest/cle/Cognition_js/exp/mentRot.html 2. Scroll down to the section titled “Experimental Method Settings (see image below).. a. Slide the “number of trials/condition” slider from 10 to 5 (This will shorten the experiment). b. Click the button labeled “New Study” c. Click the blue button labeled “Open Experiment Window” 3. Experiment Instructions: Hit the “Z” key if the two letters match when rotated. Hit the “M” key if they do not match when rotated (they mirror each other or are flipped) 4. Take a screenshot of the Reaction Time graph and paste it on the next page. 5. Answer the questions below! Copy Data Below:
Questions 1. According to the original experiment, what should happen to your reaction time as the angle of rotation increases? Did your performance match this prediction? Explain your answer, referencing your data. 2. What part of working memory handles mental rotation? Define that component of working memory. In what way does the mental rotation task suggest that the mental rotation of images in working memory is similar to how we manually rotate real images? 3. You are trying to get a new table through your front door. You look at the table and mentally rotate it to figure out how it might fit through the doorway. There are two ways the table could fit: it could be slightly tilted 10° to one side or it could be stood up 90° on its end. Using what you have learned in this demonstration, which of these two possibilities are you more likely to come up with first? Why? 4. Describe TWO more cognitive tasks (not already mentioned in the text or these questions) that rely on mental rotation.
