Elaine Nassar PSY-491: Psychology and Social Change 3-3 Module Three Video Reflection November 10 th , 2023
Describe interview participant's specific coping and resiliency skills that were critical to their ability to manage change. In the video with Amelia Manning, one of the coping and resiliency skills that she mentioned a few times while working with the two boys in her previous jobs and regarding current issues in change was to use your own privileges and skills to help others. She had a good upbringing and admitted that she was privileged enough to live a blessed life and discusses how we should use our happiness to give others that same chance. She also spoke about her own skills and higher education when dealing with change and helping others. She also spoke about systematic racism and how with issues like this those who are privileged or don’t experience these things or truly understand them should self-reflect because as she states about the power of reflection. The ability to look at yourself and see who you are, what you are and how you yourself are contributing to issues of systematic racism and inequity. Describe how you can apply your knowledge of psychology to enhance your coping and resiliency skills. I can apply my knowledge of psychology to improve my coping and resilience skills to help me to understand ways that I can improve these skills. I can understand what drives us to cope a certain way, why our emotions and behaviors are related and how we can address or recognize that, and this will help us build our resilience to taking negative actions or behaviors when experiencing inequity or helping others who experience it. This will also help me recognize when there are these types of issues and how to deal with or adapt to them. I think learning these skills are also essential to anyone planning on creating or advocating for social change.
