Elaine Nassar PSY-491: Psychology and Social Change 4-3: Module Four Video Reflection November 16 th , 2023
Describe a cognitive or social theory that you believe explains the development of the participant’s social change identity. I believe that the social learning theory explains the development of Paul Leblanc in his social change identity. Albert Bandura developed this theory and described that learners acquire new patterns of behavior through direct observation of others. (Bandura, 1977) It possesses three factors which include behavior, the environment, and internal events. In Paul’s case, he learned through his parents in an environment of living on a farm who were financially stable, religious but still helped other families who faced poverty by taking care of their children. Witnessing those acts as a child, he became influenced to pursue the same path as them in helping others who are less fortunate and helping children. He was also competent in acknowledging that most of what he acquired, and the opportunities, were based on his environment and upbringing. His sense of helping others was inspired by his family. Describe how you can apply the psychological knowledge that you have acquired within your BA Psychology program experience to effect positive social change. There are several aspects that my psychology program has taught me in effecting positive social change. In my past courses, I’ve learned about psychological disorders, statistics relating to psychology, research methods, assessment tools, policies and treatment that has grown throughout the medical field relating to psychology that I know will provide me with the knowledge and tools necessary to impact where I chose to make a career. The knowledge I have learned in this program can give me the tools that I may implement in communities that may not have those who have this type of knowledge or the type of skills to think outside of the box to effect positive change in society. In this
class so far, I have learned so much about advocacy, tools to record whether these changes are working, and what makes change effective and I believe these tools alone have taught me that my own experiences and those of the one I care about or don’t have a voice should be advocated for and if I have the opportunities or privileges to do so, then I will to effect positive change in society.
