Roneé Gladden Daven Salmi PSY 328 Project Two Milestone Template To begin your milestone, you will first select one of the professions from the list provided. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Your responses should each be about 3 to 5 sentences in length. Review the example responses in the assignment guidelines and rubric document to help you get started. Profession: Teacher 1. Personality and the Individual A. Identify one trait from the Big Five (openness, also known as intellect/imagination; conscientiousness; extraversion;agreeableness; or neuroticism, also known as emotional stability) of your choice that you think is particularly important for your selected profession and justify your response. The profession I chose is a teacher, I believe that in order to be a teacher, you need openness. As a pre-kindergarten teacher I see children coming into a classroom setting within a school for the very first time and it can be overwhelming for them, especially if they have not been around other children as much to learn from. As a teacher, I believe it is vital to have openness as a trait because you want to be open- minded and be understanding and empathetic when it comes to the children. By starting with openness, it’ll be easier to build rapport with the child and create that safe space and trust. B. Describe whether it would be most ideal for your selected professional to be low, high, or mixed for the Big Five trait you identified for most situations and justify your response.
It would be most ideal for a teacher to be mixed for the Big Five traits because I believe a teacher needs to be diverse when it comes to children. All children are made different and have different experiences, feelings, thoughts, expectations, etc. So, it would be almost impossible to use just one trait to accommodate each child. I believe that a teacher should have a mix of each trait to make the experience and quality of life for the child ideal. C. Explain whether you think the effectiveness of the Big Five trait you selected depends on the situation . To justify your response, provide a real or imagined example where the trait would benefit the professional and an example where the same trait would not benefit the professional. I believe the effectiveness of the Big Five trait, openness, does not depend on the situation. Reason being, I believe as a teacher you will need openness no matter what situation you are in. For example, being a pre-kindergarten teacher for the first time, I have had to exhibit openness by learning my students and their personalities. I have also had to build rapport with them so they can get to know me and be comfortable with expressing themselves. In any instance or situation the child requires the teacher to be open-minded, imaginative, creative, and an insightful person. As a teacher your students require sometimes for you to get on their level and if you have openness, it’ll be easier and helpful to do that. 2. Personality and Teams A. Identify another trait from the Big Five for your selected profession and describe how scoring low, high, or mixed on that trait might influence how that professional conducts their work or interacts with others. Another trait from the Big Five I chose for being a teacher would be Neuroticism (emotional stability). I believe it is vital to score low on this trait as it might influence
how a teacher conducts their work or interacts with students. Meaning, if a teacher scores low on emotional stability intelligence, they would be able to handle situations under pressure whether their students are creating a hostile or fragile situation/environment, or it could be as simple as a few students needing extra support. As a teacher, it can be hard to manage a classroom full of students, especially if behaviors are present. Having low emotional stability will be able to center the teacher and help them manage the students. If the students see the teacher not stressed and handling the situation, they’ll feel more confident and at ease. B. Explain whether you think it is better to have a diversity of traits within the same profession or among professionals with the same role or whether it is better for the professionals to exhibit the same traits. Justify your response. I believe it is vital for professionals within the same profession or within the same role to exhibit a diversity of traits because having just one trait is great, but that may not cater to the needs of all children. Children are diverse, unique, and different in their own ways. Using one trait would seem limiting to the students. If a professional diversifies the Big Five traits, then it would cater to the majority of students and make it easier for professionals to do their jobs and students to follow suit. 3. Personality, Stress, and Coping A. Describe how you would expect your selected professional to cope with stress using a trait you identified previously or a new trait of your choosing. I would expect a teacher to cope with stress using emotional stability (Neuroticism). For example, a teacher exhibiting low Neuroticism would show great control and emotion control. No matter how stressed or anxious a teacher is feeling, if they are able to gather their thoughts, take a deep breath, and think of ways to help relieve

stress for them and their students, they’ll be able to have control over their emotional stability. If a teacher is self-confident then it will help them cope with stress. B. Explain what kind of support you would expect from a person in this profession if you were seeking help or advice. Consider how much emotional intelligence you might expect your selected professional to display. The kind of support I’d expect from a teacher if I was seeking help or advice, would be how they exhibit ways to emotionally cope with adverse situations. I’d also try and speak with an experienced teacher (someone who has been in the profession for 10 plus years) and ask them about typical situations they deal with, what types of behaviors do children exhibit most, ways that I could support my students and particular students who need extra.
