Roneé Gladden Daven Salmi PSY 328 Module Three Journal Template First, complete the Big Five Personality Test and take a screenshot of your results. Next, complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Identify one trait from the Big Five (openness, also known as intellect/imagination; conscientiousness; extraversion;agreeableness; o r neuroticism, also known as emotional stability) that promotes effectiveness in one of the following areas: communication, motivation, or adaptability. You can also speak to an area of your choice. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. Include the following in your response: o Where do you see evidence of this trait in your behaviors? o Explain why you chose your trait and area. • Emotional stability promotes effectiveness in adaptability because a person who is emotionally stable would be able to adapt to any situation or environment or transition that they aren’t used to—regardless of how they are actually feeling. Someone in control of their emotions understands what they are feeling and why but is able to gain control of themselves. I chose this trait because I am working on my emotional stability. It is hard for me to gain control of my emotions sometimes and I feel like the more I work on myself and my emotions. Identify one trait from the Big Five that you would like to improve and explain why. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. Consider the following in your response: o Where do you see evidence of this trait in your behaviors? o What behavior would you like to see? • I would like to improve my Emotionally Stability. As someone who feels passionately and deeply about everything, sometimes if I’m mad, sad, worried, stressed, etc. It can be hard to take control of my emotions and think rationally. I in turn, feel all of my feelings and it’s like everything comes out all at once. I would like to be able to express how I feel without blowing up and gaining control of my emotions.
Identify one trait from the Big Five that you think helps you cope with challenging situations and provide an example. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. • Agreeableness helps me cope with challenging situations. I chose agreeableness because I am someone who doesn’t like conflict and tends to go with the flow and be easier to get along with, I’m also the type of person that is warm, kind, and empathetic so I believe it helps me cope. For example, I was told by a friend that I would be the deciding factor on the event our group of friends would be attending. For me, it was a no brainer, I decided to choose majority vote so that we’d have a great number ratio of people that are happy and enjoying themselves rather than people not possibly attending or having a great number of people not enjoy themselves. Identify one trait from the Big Five that you think is particularly important for your current or desired profession and justify your response. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. • Agreeableness is a particularly important trait to have in my current profession, because as a pre-k teacher, I need to be able to be on my students' level, understand and appeal to them. Young children need someone who is warm, kind, passionate, and that they can build a relationship with. Your textbook describes which personality traits are most important to employers: conscientiousness followed by agreeableness. Provide one reason why these traits would be desirable in an organizational setting and one reason why they would not. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. • The reason conscientiousness would be favorable to organizational settings is because employers want someone who is hard working, organized, goal oriented and driven, and focused on how to appeal to the company. The reason agreeableness might be desired in an organizational setting is because employers want employees that listen, can accept transitional changes, challenges, and tasks without a problem. These types of workers help make the business run smooth. Describe at least one limitation of trait theory when it comes to characterizing a person or their behavior. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length.
o Consider topics related to social justice issues, such as gender and atavism. • One limitation of trait theory is that it may not always be an accurate representation of the individual, behavior, or experience. For example, gender and atavism are one of the most significant and relatable topics as a person can be classified as being different from what is perceived in the world. Meaning, we can believe a man is a man, but that person does not identify as such, instead they identify as a woman, in turn limiting what we thought we knew initially about that individual. Considering that the traits are on a continuum, describe the extent to which you think you can change your traits over time. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. • I believe in the saying, “With age comes wisdom.” Well also with age, and life experiences, comes a change in who we are as individuals. As a young adult, I could’ve been outgoing and extroverted. Always sociable and never missed out on any event, but the older I get, I just want solitude, quietness, no large groups of people, and to not have to attend any social events or put myself in the position to associate more. Things that can contribute to personality change may be genetic/biological factors or environmental factors or experiences that begin to form and take shape in our lives. 1
