PSY 211 Module Two Milestone Template Review the article on the six dimensions of wellness. Then answer each question with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Choose one of the wellness dimensions and explain whether you feel it is guided more by nature or nurture. Explain your response. I feel that intellectual wellbeing is guided more by nurture rather than nature. “Most developmentalists today continue to accept and build on Piaget’s basic beliefs that children construct their own understandings of the world and that their thinking changes in fundamental and qualitative ways as they get older” (Sigelman & Rider, 2017, p.49). Intellectual wellbeing must be fostered and developed through “academics, cultural involvement, community involvement and personal hobbies that expand your knowledge and skills” (Menke, 2019). These activities can be instilled in us by our communities, families, and teachers throughout our lives, they are not part of our genes. Explain how one dimension of wellness influences cognitive well-being during a specific stage of development. The intellectual dimension of wellness influences cognitive well-being throughout multiple stages of development. As children progress through Piaget’s stages of cognitive development their cognitive capacities change drastically (Sigelman & Rider, 2017, p.48). When children reach the final stage, Formal Operations, it is characterized by the development of rational, logical, and abstract thinking. These developments are influenced by the intellectual dimension of wellness because as they learn how to use their formal operations, they develop problem solving skills and find what interests them which help to foster intellectual wellbeing. Identify the wellness dimension that you feel most in control of. Explain your response. I feel the most in control of my social dimension of wellness. The social dimension of wellbeing includes being respectful of yourself and others, “building and nurturing meaningful and supportive relationships”, and establishing “boundaries that encourage communication, trust and conflict management” (Menke, 2019). Throughout my life I was raised in a very large but also very close family. We had weekly Sunday dinners where everyone came together and shared about what went on that week. I believe that this set me up for success in being in control of my social wellbeing because it instilled in me how important having close relationships is. As I grew up, I used what I learned to foster friendships. While my friends and I may not talk constantly whenever we do get together, we share about what has been going on and we help each other through difficult decisions. I have learned what it means to be a good friend and how to effectively nurture my friendships in healthy ways. Identify the wellness dimension that you feel least in control of. Explain your response. I feel that I am least in control of my emotional dimension of wellness. “Emotional wellness doesn’t mean feeling happy all the time. Emotionally healthy people still feel anger, stress, or sadness, they just know how to manage their emotions, whether positive or negative” (Dienstman, 2021). I suffer from severe anxiety and panic disorder. Because of this it is very easy for me to lose control of my emotions and not fully understand why I feel certain ways about 1
certain things. While medication has helped some with my anxiety, my panic disorder is very hard to manage as it can cause panic attacks from even the smallest change. Choose one dimension that you believe to be predominant in development. Explain your response. I believe that the social dimension of wellness is predominant in development because “people are social animals that need connection” (Dienstman, 2021). As humans, we crave social interaction, even as children. Children’s academic success is tied directly to their sense of belonging and social wellbeing (Christie, 2020). To be successful in life, children must learn socially acceptable behavior and good communication skills. Without social interaction children may struggle to learn how to talk, read, understand their emotions, or positively interact with others. Explain how emotional intelligence and resilience factors affect your well-being. o Consider how you can apply the dimensions of wellness to support your own well-being in your response. Emotional intelligence is having the ability to be aware of and understand the emotions we feel and the impact they have on us (Dienstman, 2021). According to the American Psychological Association, resilience is the ability to process and adapt to challenges and life experiences that we face (American Psychological Association). Throughout our lives we will inevitably face challenges and experiences that we struggle with, but having high emotional intelligence and resilience can allow us to deal with and overcome these in a healthy way. 2
