The article can help us understand gender identity development beyond the research in the textbook because it emphasizes the cultural aspects, the processes, and the personal aspects of gender identity development (McLean et al., 2017). In the study of gender identity development, researchers have traditionally focused on biological and psychoanalytical aspects (Sigelman & Rider, 2017). However, this article highlights how individuals perceive their culture and how it defines their identity and sense of belonging as well as how societal norms and expectations regarding gender roles have influenced gender identity development over time (McLean et al., 2017). I believe that Albert Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory can help us understand gender identity development. Bandura’s theory focuses on how the majority of human behavior is influenced by observation, imitation, and modeling which can be applied to gender identity development (Sigelman & Rider, 2017). Boys are more likely to imitate behaviors exhibited by their male role models while girls are more likely to imitate their female role models. One of my best friends in high school was nonbinary so I have a lot of experience in being a supportive ally. First, being respectful of the pronouns they choose to use and using those pronouns when addressing them to not only themselves but to others. Second, always be a listening ear and allow them to express how they are feeling. Third, actively being an ally for not only the people you know who are nonbinary but for all others who may identify in nontraditional ways. I believe that gender identity development applies to the programmatic theme of self-care. Recognizing and understanding one's gender identity is a deeply personal and significant aspect of self-discovery. It involves a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors that contribute to one's perception of self. This process of exploration leads to increased self- awareness and self-acceptance, which can have a profound impact on an individual's mental and emotional well-being by promoting a positive self-image.
