HSE 353 Milestone Two Guidelines and Rubric Presentation Continued Overview You are developing a slide presentation meant to educate a client treatment group, their family, and friends about a specific substance of abuse. For Milestone Two, you will complete Sections I and II of your final project, continuing with the presentation you began in Milestone One. You should also be using the instructor feedback you have received to revise your work so far. Prompt The content of Milestone Two should address each of the following critical elements: I. Clarify the Substance Use Disorder A. Identify a medication that may be used in the treatment of the substance use disorder, illustrate its physiological effects, and summarize for your group the latest research on the medication. To do this, you will need to locate a journal article for a drug used to treat the particular substance you are focused on. Begin your web and/or library search using medications to treat XYZ addiction as your search term. B. Be sure to properly cite your research using APA formatting and appropriately translate all scientific terminology used in this section of your presentation for your nonscientific audience. II. Explain the Science of Addiction A. Illustrate how neurotransmission occurs in the brain. Relate it to your treatment group’s situation by identifying specific neurotransmitters that are affected by their substance of abuse and explaining how each neurotransmitter is affected. You may use illustrations as long as you cite your sources. B. Describe the nature of the reward system in the brain. How does the group’s substance of abuse affect the reward system? Use specific evidence to illustrate. C. Explain the science behind relapse in terms of how the neurobiological reactions in the brain can influence behavior. What are the implications of the science for understanding the role of willpower in treating addiction? D. Be sure to properly cite your research using APA formatting and appropriately translate all scientific terminology used in this section of your presentation for your nonscientific audience. What to Submit Your presentation should be a polished artifact containing slides and speaker notes supportive of a 10- to 15- minute talk. Any citations should be in APA format. The speaker notes should be written as though you were making a live presentation. This presentation is a narrative, not an outline; write the notes as if you were speaking to your audience and do not create lists.
