Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection NAEYC Standard: STANDARD 3. OBSERVING, DOCUMENTING, AND ASSESSING TO SUPPORT YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that child observation, documentation, and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of all early childhood professionals. They a) know about and understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment. They b) know about and use systematic observations, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies c) in a responsible way, d) in partnership with families and other professionals, to positively influence the development of every child. Brief Description of Evidence: During the fall 2023 semester as part of my ECED 120 course I completed the Key Assessment: Initial Observation and Developmental Checklist assignment. I had to get a parent of a child in another classroom to sign a permission slip for me to do my observation and developmental checklist on their child. Once that was done I was able to go and do my observation and completed my developmental checklist. With doing the developmental checklist I was able to see what the child was successful in doing and what she needed to work on and was able to write down a lot of documentation about her and her interaction with other children to find out what goals we needed to work one Analysis of What I Learned: I learned it’s always good to get permission from a parent or guardian when you are going to observe or do an assessment on their child. I learned how to just set back and observe the child’s interactions with others without interrupting. I learned how to write down what the child/children are saying to document it for future use. I learned how to take my observations and the developmental checklist and make a future goal for her to work on. How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard: Through doing the Key Assessment: Initial Observation and Developmental Checklist assignment I feel confident in my ability to observe, document, and assessing on the goals that need to be worked on to support the child.
