PSY-380 Introduction to Probability and Statistics Project 2 Read " The Study of the Effects of Yoga Exercises on Addicts' Depression and Anxiety in Rehabilitation Period ," by Marefat et al., from Procedia-Social and Behavioral Sciences (2011). 1. The study was to determine whether yoga can impact the outcome of addiction treatment. It studied those who were fresh into recovery and how significantly the exercises were helpful in overcoming triggers and cravings while in recovery. As an eastern way of life, yoga seeks to achieve this balance between the mind and the body. It also improves quality of life and the perception of overall health, increases compatibility between the immune, mental, and cognitive systems, modifies the autonomic nervous system, and increases body stability and resistance. ` 2. The t test statistic is what was being used in this study. The two groups studied were those who used yoga as during therapy and the other’s tested did not use. So, the 24 clients were split into two groups of 12 and evaluated that way. By using the Beck-2- depression and Speilberger- state trait anxiety inventory. Beck-2 depression inventory: This questionnaire is a revised version of the Beck, which underwent a fundamental change in 1996 to include a wider variety of topics [3]. Scores vary from 0 to 63 on this questionnaire, with the average score falling between 12 and 40. Only severe depression levels allow for the acquisition of scores between 40 and 50. The Cronbach's alpha value for the validity of the sample in this study is 0.90. Anxiety state-trait inventory by Spielberger: It includes two brief tests (20 items each) that are simple to comprehend, self-reporting, sensitive to temporal anxiety (state), as well as defining characteristics that may contribute to the backdrop of chronic anxiety in individuals[30].state's legality and 3. Report the statistical results for all tests (using correct APA style formatting). The results concluded that yoga can be beneficial. Those who used yoga during their therapy showed a decrease in anxiety and depressive feelings. In the experimental group, state anxiety was recorded as 47.25 13.465 before yoga and fell to 36 .08 10.698 after yoga, demonstrating a significant difference (0.042) . Trait anxiety was measure d in the experimental group at 43.25 8.740 before yoga and 42.67 8.083 after yoga, with a n insignificant difference (0.835) between the two. 4. Interpret and explain the statistical results. Was the hypothesis supported? Explain. The results helped us to understand that yoga can support those in therapy to overcome feelings of anxiety and depression. The hypothesis was supported due to see the changes and differences on the amount of participants.
Due to the small number of participants, it would be very difficult to decide whether or not others may benefit from the study. What we did find our however was there is evidence to suggest that yoga can make a difference in therapy. One of the recommendations I would suggest would be to increase the number of participants. That will give us a general idea as the test will be larger and the number of participants would help us see the changes in a larger population. 5. How do results from this study contribute to research in behavioral health? This study helps us to decide whether yoga and other exercises contribute to the overall success of therapy. The results help us to take alternative approaches that do not involve the use of medication. This can help us justify that yoga and other forms of occupational therapy can be alternative approaches to therapy. 6. How will the results of this study impact practice in behavioral health? The results of this study will help us find different ways to support those needing our help in this field. It allows us to use other things like yoga rather than medications to support someone in therapy. In some cases, with medication a person can develop dependence to a medication causing another addiction to start in their life. With this approach we are able to use this alternative
