1 Anxiety and Phobias Paper Grand Canyon University PSY -470-0501 Abnormal Psychology Dr. Joseph Keefer April 9, 2023
There are many ways that anxiety and phobias can impact our lives. Whether we have gone through adverse childhood experiences, traumas, and abuse of any sort, behaviors are known to follow. Behaviors can include physical and cognitive responses, and can vary by the severity of the experiences. Hollywood filmmakers have made several movies that portray actors as having such behaviors that can give us some insight on how a person may act with such a diagnosis. In the movie Along Came Polly, Ruben Phifer is a risk analysis that had recently gotten married and experienced some betrayal by his new wife while on their honeymoon. A couple days into their honeymoon Mr. Phifer finds his wife having sex with the scuba instructor. After the experience of betrayal and shame Ruben takes a flight back to his home without his wife who chose to stay with the scuba instructor. Upon his return Ruben returns to his daily life and runs into an old classmate who he is attracted to, he eventually asks her out on a date. After going on a date Ruben thinks she is the one that he wants to be with and spend time with, so they continue to date. Over the course of getting to know each other his partner learns that Ruben has an issue with eating peanuts from the bar top. His argument for not eating from the bowl of peanuts is that there are so many people who put their hands in there and some may not even wash their hands. In another area of the movie Ruben has an issue with one of his partner’s friends who is seen dancing too close to her to salsa music. At one point he does not want to approach the issue but eventually approaches his partner’s friends and reminds him that he is not going to take his friend away from him. Because of the past experience of betrayal from his wife’s infidelity he fears he is going to lose the girl that he wants to be with. Now that the boundaries have been established and addressed the couple continue to date. 2
A phobia is an extreme, ongoing, and irrational fear of a certain thing, behavior, or circumstance (Comer and Comer, 2021). When it comes to phobias in the movie Ruben does not eat from the bar top peanuts because of the fears of exposure to sicknesses that come with dirty hands. In the film his partner cannot understand why he is like that and cannot come to terms with his behavior. But because Ruben refuses to eat from the bowl of peanuts his partner feels she would not even extend the dating because of the behaviors displayed by Ruben. However, at the end of the movie Ruben is near a local vendor who has a peanuts on his cart and ultimately grabs the guys hands, rubs it all over the peanuts, grabs some peanuts, and throws it on the dirty sidewalk. He then proceeds to get peanuts off the street and eats it in front of his partner to prove he can change. Extreme, irrational tension, dread, or anxieties are hallmarks of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which frequently occur without a clear trigger (Comer and Comer, 2021) When it comes to the other scene about anxiety Ruben displays irritability when he sees his partner dancing very closely with another man. He is seen pacing back and forth, watching them dance while making gestures with his eyes and hands. After there is a break in the dancing Ruben approaches the individual who is dancing and tells them that they are now a couple, and he can no longer dance or see her anymore. The guy tells him that they are not interested in his girlfriend as his preference is the opposite. Ruben is relieved about that and asks for dancing lessons. For the issue with the phobia of peanuts as a provider I would diagnosis Ruben with a generalized mild phobia. For the diagnosis I would encourage exposure therapy, Ruben actually did that in the film by exposing himself to the dirty peanuts. As far as the anxiety situation I would diagnose with a mild general anxiety disorder and treatment plans would include talk 3

therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and the worst case scenario medications. In conclusion there are multiple diagnoses that we can give a person depending on the severity of the behaviors associated with the individual. Using the resources available to us to the best of our knowledge is paramount. Treatment plans and recommendations can be changed and adjusted as needed as the client’s prognosis changes, do so collaboratively with client. I enjoyed this paper as it allowed me to look at behaviors even in a movie. 4
