Report
Although structured assessments and screening tools are both valuable instruments in counselling n this scenario, I would use a screening tool, mainly because it was recommended by my supervisor. Aside from their recommendation, I would use screening tools over the structured assessments because they are quicker to administer and therefore save a lot of time (Hays, 2017). This is especially important when working with clients that have passive suicidality. Additionally, since screening tools are designed to identify specific issues such as the ones mentioned in the scenario, they will be able to directly target the specific mental health issues. Another advantage of using a screening tool in this situation is that it can help you modify your approach according to each client's unique needs. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7) is a self report questionnaire assessing anxiety and is a great example of a screening tool that can be used in this situation (Delgadillo et al., 2012). What is an example of a screening tool that can be used for assessing addiction in clients? References Hays, D. G. (2017). Assessment in counselling: Procedures and practices (6th ed.).
