Cognitive Dissonance Cognitive dissonance is a psychological effect we go through when we make decisions or when our attitudes and behaviors do not align with one another (Aronson et al., 2019, p. 151). This means that when you are doing something that you know is wrong, you will feel unsettled. I can think of a few instances where I have had cognitive dissonance. The most prevalent one I can think of is in 2017. I was engaged to someone who I knew was not who God had for me and who was just all around bad for me and emotionally abusive. I continued the engagement believing that I needed to stay because I already said yes, and I didn’t want to make him mad. It turned into a constant feeling of anxiety and depression because I knew it was wrong, but I felt I needed to keep my word. I ignored the dissonance for about a month, I thought it would go away if I ignored it. With support from my family members and my doctor I was able to realize that I did not have to do anything, and I finally broke it off. After that decision it was like a giant weight was lifted from my shoulders and I could breathe again. I do believe that the best way to deal with dissonance is to change your behavior to match the dissonance rather than changing the dissonance or trying to justify it. The feeling with still linger. A bible verse that I always went back to during and after the situation in 2017 was Isaiah 40:31, “But those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not faint (HCSB).” It is important that in times of conviction and decision making that we turn to God. He is not the provider of anxiety and worry, He is the provider of peace and He will always provide a way. Aronson, E., Wilson, T.D., & Sommers, S.R. (2019). Social Psychology. (10 th ed). Pearson.
