Stages of Displacement Stage one: Seeking Opportunities A main reason that people immigrate to the united states, is for the opportunities that America offers with school systems, work, and creating a business. Even with that being a reason to move here, some people have a difficult time immigrating. If I were counseling someone who immigrated to the united states and had a difficult time, I would need to understand what has happened to my client to make the move challenging. I would need to go deep to create a relationship with this client to where they would feel comfortable telling me their challenges. Stage two: Emotional Reactions Everyone feels emotions. However, depending on the situation, the emotions will be heightened. This could include feelings of fear and anxiety. Especially if someone is trying to come to the country with their children. As the counselor, I would need to understand what emotions their having and why. When counseling someone from another culture, it is important to be culturally competent (Sue, Sue, Neville, & Smith. 2019). Especially when dealing with emotions as different cultures express emotions differently. Stage three: Adjustment Coming to a new place comes with major adjustment. A culture shock, so to speak. The client will know the foods and traditions from their culture. It can be shocking to come to a new place where what they know, isn’t “typical”. It will be important for me, as the counselor to help my client feel that they can stay connected to their culture and that they don’t need to change their foods or traditions. Stage four: Rationalization This is the stage where the client will need to be able to express why they left and went to a new place. As their counselor it will be important for me to help them realize that what they have done, is an accomplishment. It is not easy to pick everything up and leave everything you know to go to a new place where you don’t know anyone. It takes a lot of strength and courage. Stage five: Acknowledgement This is the final stage where they acknowledge their transition to America. This doesn’t mean that they need to adopt the way of Americans, it just means that they have noticed all the changes and challenges they have endured (Serrata & Fisher. 2013). It is important that, as the counselor, I continue to encourage the client to embrace who they are and to celebrate the fact that they have made it and endured all of the hardships and they made it to the other side.
