Family therapy is a structured form of psychotherapy that seeks to reduce distress and conflict by improving the systems of itneractions between family members (Varghese et al., 2020). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a goal-directed theory, giving the client the tools and empowerment to utilize as they progress through life and experience other challenges. Our perceptions influence many of our emotions, body responses, and behaviors. At times, our thought processes or cognitions play a significant role, and usually, it is not the event in itself that is the issue but the way we react and perceive it. CBT approaches hold that thoughts—or cognitions—influence young people’s behaviors and emotions. Youth can change their behaviors and ultimately feel better through awareness and subsequent modification of unhelpful thoughts or thinking patterns (Kress et al., 2018). According to Calub et al. (2020) Individual cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) have been shown to be effective in decreasing disruptive behaviors in children and adolescents. Using Cogntive Behavioral Therapy can help replace Edwards disruptive behaviors with calming thoughts and interventions.

Using CBT with Edward means pin pointing thought patterns that single handedly can affect your emotions that can trickle down to his behaviors. Using restructuring and reframing can help combat negative thought process that can impede on Edwards day to day. Reframing Is the act of replacing any negative thoughts which can then worsen Edwards presenting problems. By replacing these maladaptive thoughts with positive ones can help Edward combat these feelings and emotions that can influence his behaviors. Role playing can be a intervention that is grounded in play therapy that could be a useful for Edward so he is able to have the tools to problem solve and using positive social skills. Using play as a way to engage children and gives them the room for a creative and positive therapeutic environment. Through the use of role playing new emotional and cogntivie associations are made with regard to their presenting problems (Kredo et al., 2016). Based on the counseling theories chosen, develop two family counseling interventions supported by the literature. A minimum of one of these interventions should be grounded in play therapy. Edward needs interventions that bring positive attention to his attributes and behaviors that make him feel special and not interventions that highlight his negative behaviors. Using Family Based Therapy this can help his parents to establish a rewards system. Everytime Edward reaches a goal that he, his family, and therapist have set together he receives a reward for reaching that goal. Another intervention could be improving self control and strengthening family relationships. These goals can be achieved by using Family Based Therapies (Varghese et al., 2020). Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy grounded in play therapy with Edward would require a safe space that Edward feels he is able to disover in. Using toys for Edward could be a place to start for him. Since Edward has ODD using toys can help model different reactions and to help implement new thought processes and will help Edward reshape his thoughts and feelings (Sokol, 2019).

Tearing pages away and emotions ball play therapy are two play therapies that could be used in a group setting. Using tearing pages play therapy techiques can use an old book and the purpose of this is to tear pages out of a book, crumple it up and toss them into the paper bin this will help Edward understand to not hold onto any feelings (Blalock et al., 2019). Teaching that we are not bound by our feelings and that we can process them and then toss them away and not be engulfed by them. Emotions ball therapy will facilitate Edward into expressing his emotions and it will help him to describe them if he has discrepencies in doing so.
