There are several principles to the andragogy which is the adult learning theory. 1. Adults have the need to know why they are learning something. 2. Adults have a need to be self-directed. 3. Adults bring more work-related experiences into the learning situation. 4. Adults enter a learning experience with a problem-centered approach to learning. 5. Adults are motivated to learn by both extrinsic and intrinsic motivators. (p.169) From the principles of adult learning, it shows that adults have a willingness to learn what is put in front of them if they understand the reason behind it. Adults want to go at their own pace. When learning they put their own experiences into situations or problems given. Training designs for adults I would suggest it being more self-paced, not giving a time limit. That way it can feel like you are not pressured to finish at a specific time, it gives you time to fully understand what you are being trained in. Scenario type of training , it would give adults the opportunity to put themselves in the situations that they are learning , for example with customer service agents you could ask what would you do if a customer called and first thing they did was ask for a manager, the employees might have had a previous interaction like that before so they would go back to how they reacted. A way of delivering the training is giving the option of doing the training whenever you feel you need it, presenting it to employees in a way that shows it can help them advance in their career. Reference: Noe, A. M. (2023) Employee Training and Development (9th ed.) Mcgraw-Hill Education Replies: Shannon, I completely agree with the way you described the principles of adult learning. I feel that the way the principles describe adults are learning with a purpose; I will admit myself I do not do anything in my job without having a specific goal or expecting a certain outcome. There is a reason I am learning something, and it is most likely to benefit me in a way whether it be a raise or even promotion. I also agree with you that we use the principles every day that we are working and if not all then some at least throughout our day when we are working. John, I agree with all the points you made in your post regarding the principles of adult learning, I can relate to some of those points. When I get thrown into some training, I want to know why I am learning new material, what is the purpose behind me needing to know this added information. With certain topics I like to be able to use my previous experience in the job to be able to relate, be able to fully understand
since I have been in those situations. I have challenged trainers in the past, I cannot say I challenged my elementary school teachers so as kids we are more accepting of information than as an adult. Great post john.
