Chapter 16 gives you a look at the most commonly used therapies (including psychotherapies and biomedical treatments like medication and ECT) for psychological disorders. After reading this chapter, answer the following in a complete essay post: Pretend that a fictional character (such as from a book, movie or TV show ) has a major psychological disorder. You are a psychiatrist or other psychological provider. What is your client's disorder? The DSM-5 should be used to support your diagnosis. Which specific type of therapies would you recommend for your "client" and why? (Select one psychotherapy and one biomedical treatment.) Identify an advantage and a disadvantage for each of the therapies you would choose. Be sure to discuss therapeutic techniques. Each psychotherapy has numerous techniques. For example, free association is a technique in psychoanalysis. Ensure key terms in bold font. Harry Potter is seeking treatment for symptoms including hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. After spending some time with the patient I’ve diagnosed him with Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a psychological disorder characterized by disturbances in thought, perception, emotions, and behaviors. To control disturbances in Harry’s thought processes I recommended the patient use an antipsychotic called Haldol. I recommend Haldol because it is known to treat positive symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions. It does this by blocking the neurotransmitter dopamine. I also recommend that the patient undergo a psychotherapy treatment called Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy . I believe that CBT will help the patient see how his thoughts effect his behavior. CBT can help the patient to unlearn negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts. An advantage of using Haldol is that it can help to control positive symptoms that are displayed by patients with Schizophrenia however the patient may also experience Parkinson’s-like tremors, dyskinesia, and several other health problems. An advantage of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is that it can help patients develop better social and problem-solving skills. However, the patient must be willing to devote themselves to the process for it to truly be beneficial.
